Has anyone done this? I know schools sometimes do it. I looked online and there are companies who supply all the gear and the eggs and collect the chicks after they have hatched but they cost around £200. Any ideas?

[I] have done this a couple of times. once i borrowed a friends incubator, the next i put fertilised eggs under one of my own broody hens, both time were a success. But I certainly would not pay that sort of money to do it :panic: the children did enjoy every stage and when using the incubator, the day they started to hatch you couldn't do a thing with the children as they were glued to watching the hatching chicks, Brill:laughing:

I would love to do it. I know the kids would be fascinated. My dad used to raise hens when I was a kid.

You can buy fertilised eggs from any breeder. A google search will bring them up.

this is something I've always wanted to do, but have never been able to afford it and don't know anyone who has an incubator/equipment I could borrow. Just thinking though, do you 100% have to have the expensive stuff, or could you somehow make your own that would work?

Next best thing for me is hatching butterflies - this is my third year of doing that (much more affordable and equally as enjoyable!) :)

Hatching quails would be an alternative if you can get hold of an incubator and brooder. I buy eggs from e-bay, which are quite cheap. mine live in an indoor animal cage- cockerels not really an issue. Just as brilliant to watch hatch. I bought my incubator for about £40 and it is great- I like manually turning the eggs though.

Ooo thanks for the idea. I will look at quails and see how to rear them.

Aww I'd love to hatch chicks too. I'm Interested by the quail idea too. I've set up a little wireless camera in a bird box in my garden. It cost £29 from qd. I'd bought one for my dad last year and it was sweet watching bluetits eggs hatching and then all comings and goings of parents feeding chicks. No baby's in my bird box yet though.
I've also sent a request to join facebook group :)
