I have got myself really confused. I am insured with NCMA and presumed I had public liability for when children are in my car with them but apparently not, I have business insurance on my car so am I covered under that? Also am I not covered if we are on a bus or in someone elses car? I am feeling a bit thick but just cant quite get my head around this.

Your public liability insurance (with Morton Michel or via NCMA) covers the children in your care in the house, on outings etc - but not in the car.

Your business cover on the car (class 1) covers the children when you are driving.

You do not need any further insurance :D

I was covered with ncma - bluefin for many years and I changed 3 years ago to aviva who were cheaper. Funny as aviva were the underwriters for the bluefin insurance.

Try a quote from here - Childcare Insurance (http://www.childcareinsurance.co.uk/) - they have specialist childminder insurance for house and car :D

Hi all just to let you know I had my profession down as childminder and had business cover. I called to check exactly what was covered (I don't mind yet) and was horrified to find out they don't cover childminders. I think this is terrible and I think many childminders must be thinking they are insured when they are not. I intend to contact trading standards as nowhere did it say they don't cover childminders. Definitely worth a call to check. Now I need to find a new policy!

Think I know the answer but.......the play group I attend is arranging a trip out in the mini-bus. How does that work? I don't have a car but do I need insurance for this as children will be travelling in a vehicle? It will be a shame if I can't go because of insurance reasons.

It is standard for public liability policies to exclude motor contingency - this means that whilst travelling in a car etc then you need to ensure that the driver is correctly insured so as childminders we ensure our motor insurance covers us for business use and we have to trust that when using public transport that they hold correct insurance. You have to remember that we have to be proved negligent in order for anyone to claim against us and whilst we use public transport then we cannot be negligent if they do something wrong.

So does a private mini bus count as public transport? Do you think I can go on this trip with my mindees?

I would say so. I certainly have been on organised trips on a coach

If you are going on a mini bus or coach they should have insurance?

The mini bus certainly should be insured as you would normally expect. That's good news then, it was something on my mind and this thread came up so I asked the question!
