TBH I'm not really bothered by it. Is that bad?
DS (8) said he wants to watch the opening ceremony but I don't think it starts until 9pm which is a shame as it's a bit late and I thought it was a family thing. DS is really into it all, he's even going to watch the wrestling with his dad who's got tickets.
All I care about is whether it's going to affect my soaps on the TV

TBH I'm not really bothered by it. Is that bad?

No, that is not bad IMO.

I see very little good and quite a lot of bad in the Olympics. If there is anything good to be had out of, then it would already have been achieved by the amount of elite sport already going on in this country and on TV.

For some reason (possibly national insecurity) the British seem addicted to whatever is the latest media-driven excuse for a mass bandwagon jump: royal weddings, Jubilympics, you name it.

The Romans used to give out 'bread and circuses' to keep the plebs happy and keep their minds off the way they were being misruled. We just get the circuses.

If this recession goes on much longer, and with no more princes left to marry off, they might be forced to kill off one of the royals to give us the next mass-hysteria event.

A family thing? What on earth gave you that impression? It's a money thing. They make a lot more profit by timing it so the live telecasts go out at peak time in the countries with the biggest TV audiences, therefore making money out of all the big advertisers. Convenient for all the Olympic sponsors too: you know, all those multinational fast-food and soft drinks companies whose products promote th healthy lifestyles we want for our children.

I won't be watching it. It's really not a thing that holds any interest for me. In fact it totally bores me....most kinds of competition does. Although I do love my ice hockey and my WWE :) I do enjoy to read the blogs of those doing ironman and multiple discipline activities, I just don't find the olympic thing interesting or inspiring.

Ceremony opens at 2012pm. That is why all the bells were rung at 8.12am this morning 12 hours before the opening.

Yes I will watch the opening and closing ceremonies. They make me laugh because they are such a fiasco!

None of the wonderful orchestras will be really playing their music for instance, it was all recorded in studios months ago. When it was recorded it was not conducted so having a Famous Conductor out on stage tonight is for show only they will not be doing anything!!

The orchestras will appear to be playing but they have all gone out and bought cheap instruments because the stage is out in the open they have covered the holes in the violins with cling film so the violins dont fill with water if it rains. What a complete joke when we are putting on show one of the best Orchestras in the world, oh and the best bit the organisers wanted the musicians to perform for free :laughing::laughing::laughing:

Not sure where the "my nation is better than your nation because I was born here" argument fits into my promotion of equality and diversity. :(

We did exactly the same, had great fun and the children loved their medals.

I will be watching and cheering on, not only GB team (will get the loudest cheer mind), but everyone who takes part. I just think the work the athletes put in is amazing.

Oh lordy, there really is no way of avoiding the saturation coverage of this monstrous white elephant is there? OK, maybe you could say we all ought to watch the wretched thing, since we're going to spend a significant chunk of our lives paying for this fiasco, but you'd think there'd be some sort of alternative choice for those few of us who haven't been brainwashed by it all.

My lo just got picked up early, so I channel-hopped through all the saved 'favourites' on TV. Nothing but clapped-out former athletes (I thought they were supposed to look healthy for all that exercise) blathering on about how wonderful it all is and how grateful we should all be for them letting us fund their enormous egos with our hard-earned cash.

I settled on CBeebies: at least that will have something normal on today. WBMD - an hour long Bob the Builder Olympic special.

Please, someone tell me it's all just a very bad dream.:panic:

Well after such a fantastic opening wasn't Paul Mac terrible. He was awful at the Jubilee Concert as well why an earth did they even contemplate having him on last night?

Tom Jones would have done a much better job.

Time foe Sir Paul to retire.

Loved the petal flame, gave me goosebumps and the look on Beckham's face when he handed the flame over.

Agree with Bunnyip. Especially the bit about the romans. That made me chuckle.
Having said that I did watch some of it last night and enjoyed it [well, enjoyed the music anyway]
I do think that the rest of the world now think we are a bunch of lunatics as it was a tad 'out there!'
The lyrics 'We're so pretty, oh so pretty, we're vacant' summed it up beautifully I thought:D
Omw when did I become such a cynic.

Oh yes, still watching. Got told off by my DD as I screamed so much when Mo Farrah was running and as for the rowers - surprised I have got any voice left!!

Two of my mindees have attended events with their parents and one is going back down tomorrow for the football.

I have 2 schoolies who take part in county competitions, one of them for gymnastics and the other one does swimming. So we have watched the gymnastics, swimming and diving. The LO's 23mths & 2yrs laughed so much at the 10 metre board sychronised diving, they kept said saying rolling, rolling, splash with hand signals to match LOL.

Really wish we had tried to get tickets but it all seemed so vague and bit of a lottery when they first announced they were going on sale - you could have been allocated everything you were interested in and they would just take the money out of your current account. I know someone who bid on £800 of tickets, they didn't get all of it, but I don't keep that kind of money in my current account.

My daughter used to be a good cross country runner and competed against Helen Glover who got a gold in pairs rowing, she also has a friend who was in shooting, we used to see Mo Farrah competing in cross country races many years ago and my daughter knows Dai green who is doing hurdles tonight - he comes from next town to us, so will be watching that although he only just made finals.

When Helen Glover won her medal I had all the kids rowing on the floor, I was in tears when they won and text my daughter saying "i wanted to be an olympic mum", sadly my daughter only got to be 2nd reserve for England and didn't get to run and then broke her ankle and didn't get back to that level again.

I loved the way the Cauldron went down.
