I have a parent coming over this evening to discuss childcare starting in January.

I am confused as to whether I ask for a retainer or a deposit...although I am thinking it is a deposit. If so how much? Or do I need one at all considering the length of time involved?

Your advice, as always, is appreciated. xx

I would take a deposit for that length of time, non refundable if they decide not to take the place up

Thanks for the reply pip. I was thinking a months deposit, does this sound about right?

Suppose it depends on how much money they've got - if they are going to rely on tax credits to pay you, they might not have a month's money sitting in the bank to give you, so try and guage that at the meeting...

Good luck! :D

I never ask for a retainer anyway

I would ask for a months deposit

Its a long time to keep the place for their child
I would also get them to sign to say that if they change their mind and dont take the place then the deposit is not refundable

Good luck

Thankyou :) . I said a months deposit and she was fine with it, infact she said she wanted to pay it because she might lose me! She really liked me and my home and I am going to meet her husband and child on Monday and take it from there.

Foxy - I dont think she would have paid £90 if she was not going to take the place it is a lot of money

Did you explain it was none refundable ?

Is the child going to come and spend some time with you before the start date ?
If you did not arrange this maybe you could give her a call and suggest a couple of hours in August

Then you can judge her reaction

Good luck

I was just about to post the same question as I have had an enquiry for care from September and was wondering what I should ask for.

Hey all, after reading all of the above I have now gone from feeling quite positive to absolutely panicking!! I seriously don't know what I'm doing - it probably doesn't help that I haven't attended the ICP course yet and won't be able to now till September! I have no idea about retainers and deposits etc arrrggghh! :panic:
