    Default Growing Cress

I'm going to get the children to plant some cress seeds next week.

Does anyone have any imaginative ideas of what to plant them in? Just thought we could make it a bit more fun.

I think we done them in egg shells at school. My children don't like eggs so that is no good, the hard boiled eggs would be wasted.

You could do them in yoghurt pots - decorate the pots with faces, let the cress be the hair.

Or you could make a hairy caterpillar - use half an egg box (lengthways) as the body and plant the cress in that, paper circle for a face, pipe-cleaners for legs and antennae.

stick some cress/grass seed into foot of tights, stuff cotton wool into the rest of the foot, tie open end in a knot. decorate with wobbly eyes, mouth, nose, and ears.

then watch as the bald 'Mr/Mrs potato head grows hair.

    Cress Caterpillar

A variation on the pot is to grow a cress caterpillar.

Cut the bottom half off an egg carton and then cut it again length ways so you are left with two, long shapes each with three compartments.

To make one caterpillar paint the outside of the carton green with a yellow stripe around the top.

Glue on some eyes, a nose and mouth and make two pipe cleaners into antennae and fasten them so that they stick out above the eyes.

Line the base with a strip of plastic (to prevent the carton from going soggy).

Add some scrunched-up kitchen roll and cotton wool as before, leaving a space from the top of about 1cm.

Sprinkle the seeds along, pressing them down lightly.

Leave as before, checking daily for growth and dampness.

What about in potatoes (raw) the moisture helps the cress grow and they can decorate them them easily as things will push into the potatoe. Also topical at the moment Mr Potatoe Head and toy story
