    Default Poetry

A couple of months ago I had my inspection and gave feedback on here as we all do.

I forgot to say that I mentioned to the inspector that I make a conscious effort to read poems to children. I think we were talking about how I encourage language or literacy or something along those lines. Her ears pricked up and she said "Ooooh, that's a great example of cultural capital". I hadn't actually thought of it like that, but there you go - a little tip for you. She even mentioned it in my report.

I have always enjoyed sharing poetry with children. Some of my favourites are based on fireworks - there are some great examples on the internet. Lots of them describe fireworks as fountains, or showers and so always a great conversation starter which even pre-schoolers can join in with.

Another lovely one which children love is 'Cats Sleep Anywhere' by Eleanor Fargeon (spelling ?) and little toddlers enjoy putting a toy cat to sleep somewhere to extend the poem.

There are lots of lovely seasonal/weather poems out there too.

Oh Maza, what a blast from the past!

I absolutely loved 'Cats Sleep Anywhere' when I was young. I've just googled it and the results brought up a book that I remember owning. The memory gave me a really happy buzz

I'm just about to start a pets topic, so the poem is going to be a perfect addition. Thank you

    Thanks Maza,
I love poetry too, and often read/recite poems to the children... another thing to make a note of!

I love cats sleep anywhere too! There is another lovely poem called Winter Morning by Ogden Nash and another poem about a squirrel that starts 'whisky frisky hippity hop' but I don't know who it's by! I often recite either of those on our travels!

Oh I love that squirrel one loocyloo!

I also thing the AA Milne poem - Halfway Down the Stairs' is so sweet. I liked it as a child - I used to love playing on the stairs - each stair was a different house in a street for my teddies, or a different hospital bed for each teddy, and so my nanna used to recite that poem to me. As an adult living in a flat we obviously didn't have stairs and DD always wanted to play on the stairs whenever we went to her cousins. If ever we came back from a playdate in a house she always to tell me that she wished we had stairs, so I used to share that poem with her too.

Do you remember Pam Ayres reading 'I Wish I'd Looked After my Teeth'?

Ooo yes and the dolly on the dust cart!

There is another poem I can't quite remember about it being a boring day and then 'daddy fell into the pond!'

There is a super book called 'I like this poem' that has them ranked in ages and reason why it was chosen. It has lovely poems in it. I used to do speech and drama exams as a child, and learnt many of these for exams.

At dd's old school they used to hold a poetry recital competition every year. My daughter came second one year and the girl who won recited 'When Daddy Fell into the Pond'. DD did the Cats Sleep Anywhere poem. The following year, DD won and she recited 'I'm not Scared of the Monster'. She won a poetry book and thought it was the most boring prize ever - I obviously haven't passed on my love of poetry to her!

I'm off to google dolly and the dustcart because I don't know that one!
