Winter isn't too far away now and some of these 'must do's' will require some planning!

We did elf on the shelf last year for my daughter for the first time and she loved it so much that all she had talked about all year is the hope that santa will send another elf. We are that excited that I have a excel spreadsheet set up with each days activities and have to do lists of things I need to prepare or buy to get ready for the month of December. I will pop over to your pinterest board later x

That's lovely some great ideas! I am thinking I might do elf on the shelf this year my middle daughter (11!) has said she hoped Santa will send one ! We have booked a feed the reindeer with Santa session at the Phoenix park, a huge park beside us which has several herds of wild deer In it.. My daughters don't know so will be a surprise! I love Christmas yay!

I have to say I hate Elf on a Shelf. I had never heard of it until a couple of years ago. Another marketing hype.

    Me too!

We don't do it. I have an advent calendar that has an activity to do each day that the mindees enjoy.

Two things I have never heard of in this thread:

Elf on the shelf?? Where has this come from? Sounds a bit 'big brother is watching you' scenario, which I am definately not comfortable with, has it been thought up to be a behaviour management technique for those that need that threat of Father Christmas won't bring you toys if you are not good? The thought of an Elf watching and then informing Father Christmas of everything that happens doesn't sit well with me.

'Winter bucket list'???? Bucket list comes from 'kick the bucket' ie when I die. Never heard of it being used in the context of anything other than a list of things I want to do before I die and I am not comfortable with it in reference to Early Years children's activities.

Two marketing hypes I won't be following I'm afraid. Like others, the countdown via an advent calendar to this magical time for LO's is my plan. I love everything about Christmas but will not be joining the commercial led 'celebrations start as early as possible,' advent calendar throughout December, couple of weeks before Christmas -stories and crafts or the children and I and their families will just get fed up of it all - short, magical alongside the Christian story of the Nativity.
    I can't wait.

I agree ... The phrase 'bucket list' was bothering me ... But I couldn't think why!

I like a nice traditional count down to Christmas starting with advent Sunday. My Advent candle arrived today and there was great excitement and talk about Christmas by the LOs.

Nice list. The sort of sentimental, romantic mush which makes adults go all gooey about how "Christmas is really for the kids; such a magical time......ahhhhhhhh" (or at least the one day when we can ignore everyone else's pain and suffering, pretend everything is fine, and give us the excuse to act like total b45t4rd5 the other 364 a year.)

It tends to ignore the grim reality that the honest version of 2015's Xmas bucket list (and I deliberately use the X-version cos, doG knows, it no longer has much to do with 'Christ) for most children in the UK reads:-

"Frozen, FROZEN, F-R-O-Z-E-N. Gimme more Frozen. Gimme X-box, Wii, tablets, I-pod, I-pad, anything else flashy beginning with "I" that will cost you a month's wages and last 2 minutes. Gimmee everything else that any of my peer group have, don't need, and will be bored with by the time something new and shiny comes out. Gimmee all the pink/blue (delete according to gender stereotype) plastic cwap that my developing mind has been bombarded with on Cartoon Network and Milkshake. Just GIMME THE STUFF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (................or feel guilty like you're a ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-d parent.)"
