    Default Japan/tsunami

    How awful is it.

Think we should all be saying a little prayer for all those affected and those who are sitting expecting a tsunami to hit.

Makes you realise how lucky and precious we are.

I've been watching it all morning. I think it's hard to comprehend the scale of it all.

They're saying it's something like the 6th biggest earthquake ever recorded.

I had not watched the news this morning, so just turned them on after reading this thread.

This is so awful, Japan seems to be as prepared as you could ever be, still the footage is unbelievable. It is too frightening to think about how the poorer countries will be affected.

    It is a sad day.

That was my thoughts too. So much devastation going on, especially in that part of the world at the moment.

Seeing cars and boats tossed around like they were in a child's play pool is really scary.

    Yes its truly awful...

made all the afterschoolers watch the news for 15 minutes after school and we talked about how so many people will have lost loved ones and how lucky we are to live in a country that doesn't experience national disaster on this sort of scale...

and one was sent for some reflection time for inappropriate comments

What did the parents think of you making their children to sit down and watch this?

Have to admit I wouldn't have been a happy bunny if it had been mine but I'm guessing you cleared it with them first?
    .................................................. .................................................. ........

It's very scary that all this is happening. I'm so sad for all those people who have lost their friends and family and their homes and possessions, words just aren't enough.

We sometimes have the news on 'made them' was prob not strictly true we discussed it and I gave them the choice but I did send a 8 year old for reflection time.

is it not appropriate to discuss something which has devastated so many lives?

it was pre watershed so not like they saw dead bodies
we saw a map on the tv so I pressed pause, someone found Japan and the countries which were potentially at risk of a tsunami were highlighted in red
they learnt what an earth quake was, we looked at how earth quakes happen on the pc and how the earth is made up (my poor explantion of crusts around an apple just wasn't cutting it) and that a tsunami is a big wave.

we discussed how we are lucky that all our family and friends are safe.

and no I didn't run it by the parents, I thought it was o.k and my 3 year old dd was there.

sorry oiabm i agree with flutterbyes i watched the news with my 2 yr old mindee and his 4 yr old sister
the 2 yr old kept asking for his programmes and i said no this was important to see and we kept it on news 24 for about an hr
the 4 yr old loves world news we talked about how the earth shook and how buildings fell and how it made the sea waves go very rough.
her dad's village in India was badly affected by the 2004 tsunami and we've talked about it before
last year we watched the Chilean miners being rescued too and she cheered for each one that was brought up, I think it's very important that the children know about what's happening in the world
