Default TAX RETURNS - A REMINDER - PLEASE READ

Last year there were lots of messages on here and on FB from people who hadn't realised that you have to get a 'key' from HMRC to be able to file your tax return online. The key is a long number which HMRC send you via Royal mail and it takes about a week to come back.

This means you have to apply for your key in the next few days or you will not be able to do your tax return in time and could face a penalty!!

Those of you who had a key last year but have mislaid it - I did this too but got it emailed to me (there is a link on the SA page for lost passwords and keys etc). They post half on the website and half comes in an email to help prevent fraud. You do not get the half that appears on the website again so make sure you write it down!

I've put this in the lounge deliberately so everybody can benefit from the reminder. Hopefully it will save some of the stress and worry that others went through last year. x

I don't understand - I thought we did tax returns in April? Or are these the ones from April 2010 people are handing in now?

You can do them any time between April and Jan 31st. We are currently almost at the end of the session for doing tax year April 1st 09 to March 31 2010 (its actually april 6th to april 5th or something but I do mine month by month instead which is allowed) Paper ones had to be in by september (I think) and online done by 31 January

    Hope that helps x

I lodge mine as soon as it is online. Like to know what I have to pay. Takes all the stress away

Do you know that it is a legal requirement with the HMRC that you books are available, up to date, on demand if they turn up on your doorstep and that they have levy heavy fines if they are not.

Saying that I haven't done my own books since May 2010!

I got a reminder in the post last week from inland revenue (I usually do it end of April / May online but must have forgot this year Luckily i submitted it the same day so i wouldn't forget.
Had to pay £10.56 which i think was national insurance contributions owed.

Hi, I am doing my first tax returns and just wondering what % of my car tax I can claim? I have done my mileage ok but pay a years tax in Jan for my car and cannot find the information on HMRC site.

If you can help it would be great, thanks

    Hi Suzy

If you are claiming mileage you cannot claim anything for tax I'm afraid.

    Agree

The 40p/mile is to cover all expenses on your car.

I had a bit of a panic because I had a reminder come in the post last week....but had submitted my tax return online in December. Turns out the latter was dated 16th Dec, just before I submitted it...it took that long for the letter to arrive. I take it I don't need to do anything, I have the confirmation email so they definately recievied it ok, and I have had my rebate in my bank

What books do you have that they can inspect.
Do you give receipt when a parent pays and if yes do parents sign your copy of the receipt to prove how much they payed?
