Default GO ON LOOK IN YOUR FOOD CUPBOARDS

Go and have a check and see if you have anything that is way out of date

I found some Christmas puds and some flour

I was reading that some people have things still from the 70s and 80s and still eat them

Someone had a bernand matthew turkey that was years out of date and they still ate it

    What about you ?

Is it a job you do all the time or now and again ?

Do you still eat it if it is months out of date ?

the only things i tend to have out of date in my cupboards are dried herbs!

you know the ones where you buy for a certain recipe for half a spoonfull then never use again

i made a butternut squash risotto last week and needed sage, i got it out the cupbaord and it was dated BB 11/08

(i still used it tho and we are all still here ) lol

i use stuff after the best before date but not if it says use by date.

Usually just herbs and maybe the odd packet mix. I use herbs for a good year or so after there best before, just means they might have lost a bit of their flavour.

nothing gets the chance to go out of date in my cupboards.... my kitchen is so small that i only buy whats going to be used in the next couple of weeks so it all gets used quickly!!!

    A good reminder though!

i thought i cleared my cupboards regularly but before xmas i was looking for somehting and found some soup mix from 2007
    i did throuw that away

i do eat food out of date i don't care what it says on the packet i smell and taste it and if it tastes ok i eat it.
still here aren't i and i never ever get upset stomachs.

think about what yogurt is anyway ( bacteria) so a day ortwo out of date is not going to make it any worse

yesterday i found 6 large jars of baby food from 2007 when i weaned ds1
In my defence, dp had put them in the tall man's cupboard that i can only access with a chair if i am on tippy toes - he does that a lot...i often re-buy things that i must have forgotten to buy, only to find them perched on a shelf in the tall man's cupboard...
the one that he built himself, clearly for himself a i am 5ft5" NOT 6ft3" LOL
What's for you, wont pass by you

I'm a keen cook and do sort out my cupboards from time to time. Anything with an expired Use By date goes but I use my discretion with Best Before's, especially with tinned stuff, dried herbs and spices. I tend to only throw them away on the theory that if I haven't used them at all in a year or two then I'm hardly going to and don't need them cluttering up my cupboard!

i cleared out the walk in pantry just before christmas (the first time since i moved in 6 years ago) & chucked a bin liner full of tins, dried goods & packets

i remember picking up the bin liner to put it in the wheely bin & it all came out the bottom as it was too heavy
    What a crock!!!

I checked all my cupboards not so long ago when EH were coming out to inspect me. Usually it's OH that goes through all the cupboards and he chucks anything away that's past the use by date even the tins. I tell him stuff in tins doesn't go off but he doesn't listen

I defrost and sort the freezers every month. The fridge gets a clean and sort out weekly. The cupboards are not quite as lucky and usually get a bottoming about 2 times a year. Not too much waste now but `i used to be really bad at storing out of date stuff.

I am not hugely bothered about best before dates - it is simply that - best before a certain date but perfectly fine for quite a while after. I use my discretion - if it smells and looks ok i will eat it.

I am a bit more careful when it comes to my kids though.

I will also eat things over the use by date too as these always err on the side of extreme caution and are often fine so a week or so after.

I ate a yoghurt today 9 days over its use by date!! I tell you later if i get sick!!

To anyone throwing out tinned foods.....what a waste....the dates on tinned foods are mainly for stock rotational purposes within supermarket. It means that the shelf stackers can see which goods have been there the longest and don't just fill from the front (this is from a food warehouse working friend). Unless a tin has been dented or pierced the food inside should last a lifetime.

Having said that there are very few things in my cupboards that are out of date. Like others there are some herbs and spices and some pulses. I don't have enough storage space to have lots of things we rarely eat. My freezer does have some frozen fruit (blackcurrants and raspberries from the garden) that are over a year old. I keep meaning to do something with them, but we don't eat many puddings or jam.

you can tell if a yoghurt has gone off as the lid balloons up.

I was checking my emergency bag and realised the snack a jacks in it were very out of date. (need to check bag more regularly) wouldn't have given them to the children but Gary and I enjoy them lol.

I am terrible for not checking dates but always check them before using if that makes sense.

I will eat things past their dates but never give anything even a day out to the minded children (or my own if I had any). Have had yoghurt two weeks past their dates before now. Sight and smell go a long way in judging something

i think the sell by/ use by dates have taken away common sense
we're all perfectly capable of telling if something has gone off by the smell usually
