Hubby reckons it alms boxes for the poor?
Why is "phonics" not spelled the way it sounds?

this tells abit about it, lots of variations
I have the same understanding as your hubs - the opening of the poor boxes to share with the poor. It was also traditionally a day of for the servants and they would be given a christmas box by their employers.
I think this is the real reason.
To me Boxing day means left overs um um
