    Default New education secretary...

I have been looking online for information about the new education secretary - does she have a background in education? Does she have children? Does she know anything at all about her new job?

Well... she comes from Yorkshire if that's a start

In my completely unscientific hunt around t'internet I came up with this - and there are some further interesting articles to the right

    Thanks.

At least lucy powell , the shadow education secretary understands early years , she was very opposed to truss when she was the junior secretary. Hopefully she will keep Justine Greening on her toes.

My oldest worked with Justine Greening when he was a policy maker and lobbyist for the NAHT - she was keen to cut youth crime in Wandsworth and included local headteachers on the discussions.
His ( anecdotal) observation of her was that she was hardworking, very approachable, thorough and was in the background of lots of things.
He now works for think tank representing a group of universities and she has already scheduled meetings........so, fingers crossed, she will be ok.
But I always think the mp's are only doing their job well when they do things I agree with....unless she stops the acadamy policy, gets rid of sats in primary schools, or even just the grammar element, accelerates the issue of some children being funded less than others, depending on where you live. Makes sure the proposed ofsted head does not get the position, sees the importance of childminders over nurseries and pays more for 3/4 year old funding and the proposed 30 hours funding is funded generously, makes sure that the whole curriculum is as important as English and maths from EY to KS2 and that the importance of play is not just a sound bite but she actually believes in it. That she appreciates childminders, nursery workers, teachers and teaching assistants, headteachers and university lecturers and is sympathetic to how hard the majority of them work.......my list goes on.....
Not a big task for you to get me to respect you Justine!!

I was checking her out the other day. She gives hope to my son. He too is taking a degree in finance and hopes to be an accountant, so maybe he too one day can be a minister of education.

I'd love to know the thought processes that go into assigning roles. Makes me wonder why we have to have specific childhood education qualifications to work with a mere handful of children, when politicians with no relevant qualifications can work in a role that impacts on every single student in the land.

But here's hoping the latest prime minister knows what she is doing, and the choice is a good one.

I was saying the same thing to my DH too. Also, they only found out on the day which job they were getting, so they hadn't even spent any time researching the role/educate themselves etc.

It's such a massive role though, because although we all have a list of things we hope she'll do/change for EYFS and primary, she also has to oversee secondary and further education.

She's my local MP and I've met her a couple of times in group situations (and saw her in the pub where she was having a very serious conversation with a friend - I was trying to earwig, but couldn't hear properly, lol). Neighbours of mine who have had more to do with her really like her and say she seems very genuine and dedicated to helping people. Fingers crossed.
