Default What did you want to be when you grew up?

I had many things i wanted to be but an author was one of the main ones. But just listening to the forth Harry Potter and it says something along the lines of it was hard work holding the golden egg and map in his hands. My first thought was why did he not put the egg in a bag so he would have his hands free.
Of course the practical thinking probably makes me a great childminder but would of made for a rubbish author.
Looking back i am glad if my choice.

What about you what did you want to be. Are you glad you didnt do it. What would of made you good at it or bad.

I have a recurring dream where I'm being pressured into deciding what I want to be when I grow up. In my dream I get very stressed as I have no idea what I want to do.
In those first few moments when I wake up I still have that thought that I must decide what I want to be when I'm a grown up. Of course once I'm awake properly I realise that it's a bit too late to be worrying about it now!

When I was young I always wanted to be a teacher, so I trained to do that before changing direction completely and having a career in finance. Once I had children of my own I thought I'd like to be a midwife. Unfortunately I got caught up in childminding and have never managed to escape

Your dream sounds very scary in the i can imagine that horrible feeling staying with you for that day wonder what a dream specialist would make of it. My odd reoccurring dream is being chased by a tiger, finding a tree then spending the rest of the night sitting in the tree waiting to be eaten. I always wake up feeling shaky and cant shake it for ages.

I like the idea of being a midwife too.

My teachers at school always said I should be a teacher but I wanted to be a vet because I am an animal lover which is why later on I decided I couldn't be a vet as I couldn't deal with the horrible side of the job.
I still don't know what I want to be lol. I trained to be a driving instructor once but I really fancy being an accident investigator. On a sensible level I wish I had trained in law.

When my DD was about 6 her wish when she grows up was to be a scarecrow

I wanted to be a vet nurse - I didn't believe I was clever enough to be a vet. Unfortunately after doing work experience at a vets I found I was very allergic to animals, a rabbit made my eye swell and water and cats caused sneezing and asthma - I also struggled with my asthma under the lead aprons as they were so heavy and I was nearly sick when they operated on an eye (all other operations were fine it was just the eye one, still can't watch them on tv).

I loved working with children from 14 I babysat & was a sunday school teacher but my Dad wouldn't let me do childcare I had to do computer Studies which I hated - he was right computers are the way of the world (this was mid 80s). In 6th form I did a short childcare course and volunteered in a playschool.

Left school not knowing what I wanted to do My Aunt got me an interview with the Automobile Association and I fell into the job for 10 years.

My son used to say he wanted to be a Pokemon trainer, when reminded he said he is doing the best equivalent he could find - this year he hopefully graduates as a vet.

I wanted to be a police woman when I was little and then a teacher ... But wanted to work in a nursery so when I found out about being a nursery nurse thats what I decided to be ... choosing options at age 13. I did my NNEB and have nannied/worked in nursery and childminded ever since.

I did think about training as a chef ... my Saturday job for 2 1/2 years was working in staff dining room for waitrose .. along with the head chef I would cook 3 meals for lunch, puddings etc alongside all the rolls/sandwiches baking etc and would do morning and afternoon tea breaks on my own. Then clean the kitchen down. I worked hard but I loved it. However I decided I didn't I want to do it forever!

Every now and again I wonder what I might do 'when I'm grown up' ! I'd really like to work at local zoo/theme park and do keep my eye open for a job in the educational department!

When I was nannying, a family I knew had a Norland nanny who left after 3 weeks because she was expected to do the children's washing, cleaning and cooking !

When I was really young I wanted to be a farmers wife (!) and a concert pianist in my spare time!!
As a teen I knew I didn't want to be a scientist, couldn't think of anything worse, did work experience and went on to become a scientist!!
I don't miss it now I'm childminding though so obviously wasn't completely the right career path for me!

I wanted to work in a library as I thought it would be allowed to sit around and read all the books - I did about 12 years ago work as relief staff in our local library and I was on my feet behind the counter or pushing a heavy trolley full of books, reshelving them - the only perks were not having to pay fines on books I borrowed.

As a teenager I wanted to work with horses and in particular be a riding instructor, my mum persuaded me when I left school to first do a secretarial course so I had something to fall back on, I then got engaged so settled for an office job and gave up horse riding. When my children were small I started riding again at a local riding school, in the summer we hacked out but in the winter we had lessons in the indoor school and I soon realized that the way I was taught to ride eg " grip with your knees, elbows in, hands down and don't fall off or you'll frighten the horse" wouldn't have got me very far as training as an instructor.

I never meant to be a childminder, it sort of happened by accident when one of my daughter's friend's mum at playgroup (that's what they were called 30 years ago) asked me if I could pick her son up twice a week and look after him for an hour - even though I could have done it without registering, I decided to do it properly as the child was chronic asthmatic. *****minded for about 8 years, then got an evening & weekend job at Sainsbury's doing price control and advertising in the office, then did an Access to HE course intending to do primary school teaching - I had a place at Bath Spa to start in 2000 but we couldn't afford for me to give up work, so I turned down the place and used the A levels instead to get a job in the Library & Learning resources dept at local FE College, I did a qualification for teaching adults - ended up teaching on the Childminding course and somehow persuaded myself to join my students and re-register!

I am really hoping to retire in 4 or 5 years time and travel round Europe in a campervan with my husband - I'm really hoping this is one dream that I don't give up on.

I wanted to be a forest ranger.

I used to love meeting and listening to the the forest ranger in our woods and became a youth volunteer.

I worked in outdoor education whilst studying and was set on specialising in that area so nearly my childhood dream.
I then did a VSO stint and came back and fell in love.
So my teaching took over as there were more jobs in the 70's in schools than outdoor education centres and mortgages had to be paid for.
It soon became necessary to have a degree in forestry or geography etc... To have a ranger type job. So my outdoor life and dream became a weekend interest and my volunteer work for wildlife trust slowly became less and less when my children came along.
But I expect this is why I have always taken an interest in the outdoors with children.

From a very young age I wanted to be a nurse. My plan was to train near home then answer an advert for a nurse to help a wealthy patient in New York or somewhere similar. So for my school work experience I got a place at the local hospital. Had to buy a pair on clear nylon tights and I did not like wearing them. Secondly, amongst other less glamourous jobs that nurses have to do I saw patients having bed baths and that grossed me out at sweet 16 and never been kissed. Just don't think I ever recovered. Went into banking - and that is another story.

I wanted to be a vet but wasn't good at maths. Had all my dreams crushed by the school careers officer who advised me to go into office work. I did in the end (14 years), but what I would really love to do is run an animal sanctuary and rescue wild animals. As a child, all the other kids knew to bring any creatures to me as I was always caring for something. Even kept a baby blackbird in my cupboard until it was fledged.

I remember being interviewed by the careers advisor, I was age 14 or 15, I said I wanted to stay at home but still have money. He thought I was being very silly, no one is going to pay you money to stay at home.
Well I think I achieved my ambition , childminding fits it very well
