My little girl can talk and talk and talk and I found myself saying to her the other day
    "Stop bumping your gums".

And also "you will get square eyes if you stand that close to the tv

My dad said to me about pierced ears, If you were meant to have holes in your ears you would have been born with them.

If you were meant to smoke you would have a chimney on your head, and if you bite your nails you'll look like a hedgehog.

"He's as thick as two short planks."

When I painted my nails - "have you been at the strawberry jam"

"Were you born in a barn" when I left the living room door ajar!

    "I'm not made of money"

"For crying out loud!" was a favourite in our house in place of swearing................took me years to realise what my parents were "not" saying

There are things my mum used to say that I refuse to ever say to my own kids. Her favorites were "Fag Ann" Hate that term with a passion. "Cut it out" and the one that used to make me very worried was " I've got a bone to pick with you!" That was for when I was in big trouble

I said most of the above LOL

A favorite phrase that my mum picked up in Switzerland and used a lot was "Gardez vos onions!" She was not fluent but she used this one a lot

The reply to "Where are we going" from my dad was "to see a man about a dog" - I was always disappointed when we never found him or the dog!

ah ah ha that remind me when I arrived in England I heard the expression "she ran away with a sailor" , the father of the family where I was au pair was ex navy. Awhile later when I tried to use the expression but said " she's gone on holidays with a navy man!!"

    everyone laughed

My uncle always used to say "Be good, and if you can't be good be careful" when we went out. And my granddad (in an accent I couldn't possibly reproduce) used to say " No you can't tell her nothing nor yet take her nowhere".

I say that all the time!

Reminds me that my Mom also used to say 'take her anywhere twice, once to apologise'.
