Default HOURLY RATES OVER THE COUNTRY

NCMA recently did a survey and these were the results of the pay from the country. It was based on 100 people.

The mean hourly fee charged by NCMA members was £3.61 per child, up from £3.54 in 2008. Fees were highest in Greater London (£4.64) and the South East (£3.90) and lowest in the East Midlands (£3.14) and the West Midlands (£3.10).

A higher proportion of respondents than in 2008 indicated that their annual turnover was more than £7000 (53% in 2009, compared with 47% in 2008). Given that hours were broadly the same as in 2008, as were fees (after inflation), this might be accounted for by the slight increase in the average number of children being cared for by each childminder.

    That is interesting

I live in the South East, and have done a bit of research. In my ward other CM's seem to be charging basic of £4 per hour. That sounds about right then.
I won't be charing that much when I start though, as obviously I will be a new CM.

don't undersell yourself. I did that then found it really hard to raise my rates. You should charge the average for your area.

If you want to charge £4 an hour do it from the start as I did, its hard raising your rates afterwards, Personally I think £4 is a fair amount where ever you live judging by that survey and what others say.

I was charging £3 ph, same as I was getting in Herts 8 years ago. I've got a new mindee starting this month and have put my fees up to £3.25ph. I was just chatting to cm friend in Herts and she said it's £3.75 where she lives but £4ph for under 20 hours.

I charged £15 a day when i started 8 1/2 years ago, but that only lasted for a few months, when i realised i was making a loss.

    Charging nearly double that now.

It's £5-£6 an hour here - & I'm not far from Twinkles -when I started 3 years ago it was £4-£5 an hour - then it stuck at £5 - then EYFS came in & now most charge nearer to £6 an hour.

The Juggler and Caroline L (couldn't quote you both in one go lol)..maybe I just will then after all!

I just didn't want to charge too much as I will only just be starting out.

There are about 20 roads in my ward..and I had a look at other CM's and they were all at least £4 p/h. I suppose if I charged less this may annoy other CM's as I will be under cutting them.
I also don't want to see too cheap compare to everyone else as it will make me look inexperienced and could put people off!

I might charge £4 for part time and then if I get full-timers do a bit of a discount. It is difficult to decide the right price, but I am spending out alot on doing up a Playroom and buying all new equipment, so need to make my money back somehow

I do think it is fair to charge more now the EYFS is in place, as CM's have a lot more work to do.

I agree , you won't make yourself popular if you undercut the other minders.
