Default On the subject of business names again...

...how DOES being self-employed and having a name for your business work?

I know how things work from the point of view that we already run a business from home so went through the whole procedure of thinking of a name and registering as a limited company with Companies House, but don't know anything about being self-employed at all.

You can call your business anything as long as you complete your tax return in you name. This is just your trading name.

If you are registered with Companies House, this costs loads, then you use that.

    Fab

So basically I just keep a note of whatever I take from the minding business for myself and pass the info along to our accountant who deals with our other business and completes our self-assessment forms for us?

Make sure you keep a good record of all your expenses otherwise the tax bill will rise quickly.

Look in the NCMA book as there are a lot of expenses we can claim that may not be known about by your accountant.

    Thanks Debbie - will do!

I haven't sent my NCMA application in yet - not sure when exactly to do that if I have no idea when my minding certificate is going to turn up.

Depending on where you are there are grants and the NMCA/Morton Michelle pack is included free of charge.

If you have to pay for it yourself I would wait until the certificate arrives and so not waste the insurance time.

Yes, the lady who took our DHC/ICP course mentioned there was a start-up grant. You just reminded me to email her to find out how to go about applying for it.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that its still available in this area. I've already forked out £74 getting a signature on my medical form so am hoping for a bit of help with the NCMA registration!!
