Default What is an assistant allowed to do?

I rang Ofsted today to enquire about getting hubby registered as my assistant. She told me he is already down as a "Staffed member" whatever than means What is he allowed to do? (with parental permission obviously).

Can he be left alone with the children?
Can he do a school run?
    Anything else?

It means he has to do whatever you tell him to do

It should be written on your certificate what he can do. Have they sent you a new one?

No. Apparently the inspector registered him in March at my inspection. She didnt tell me nor have I got it on my certificate. I have written to them asking for it to be put on my certificate to show parents he is a "Staffed Member"! I will wait and see what happens.

Nice lady from Ofsted has just run and is sending me a new certificate saying that when my assistant is present I can have 5 under 5 (William is included in those 5, I think). She also confirmed I dont have to ask for a variation for 4 days in September because hubby will be at home then. He is also allowed to mind the children on his own with parental permission and do school runs.

I spoke to Ofsted today and the guy said that although my husband is registering as my assistant this will not reflect in increased numbers for me.

But after reading the last post above I think I will ring them again to clarify.

Is your understanding that with an assistant you can mind more children?

I am not sure what she was talking about - I had 6 kids around my legs at the time but I did ask if I needed a variation now for 4 under 5 for so many days in September and she said no I didnt. I think it will be clearer when I see the wording on my cert.

I would phone them because you should be able to.

You can mind more children when you are together, but obviously when on your own you go back to single minder status and whatever numbers you were allowed then.

William would be the 6th place, wouldn't he? So you can actually have 5 mindees under 5 if that's what it says on your certificate. So long as your "employee" is there with you.

    Am I wrong?
Why is "phonics" not spelled the way it sounds?

No Tatia you are right - the wording on my new certificate is

"when an assistant is present may care for no more than 5 children under 8 years, and of these, not more than 2 may be under 1 year at any one time

may at times agreed and confirmed in writing by parents, leave an assistant in sole charge of the children"

    Whereabouts are you?

My hubby is registered in his own right as a childminder bit we can have no extra children when working together just allowed two under ones. I wouldn't mind but i have a 15ft x 15ft conservatory for the children and a huge back garden.

I need to apply for a variation in September for three days 8 - 5pm and to be honest only 1.5 hours a day will I be on my own with 4 under 5' as Gary would be at home the remainder of the time.

Liverpool. Why would that make a difference? Although she did ask on the phone whether I wanted to increase my numbers, which I didnt - all I really was after was my certificate reworded to show parents if he was needed to cover Ofsted knew about it. But she said I wouldnt need a variation now for the week as hubby is on hol and I can take 5 under 5 when he is present.

Have you written a letter yet? I would definitely mention that really it is only for 1 1/2 hours per day and see what they say.

No reason really just wondered if yor inspectors were more friendly than ours lol.

Am in the process of trying to word it right but am putting in a two week rota showing how my under 5 spaces are filled (one of my under fives comes on different shifts over two weeks) and am highlighting the fact that for two hours say only one childminder adn rest of time 2.
