    Default Broken leg

    Hello

Just found out my 2yr old Mindee has broken his leg

Although I don't know how he's done it I wanted to start getting together ideas of what to do when he comes to me in plaster.

Has anyone else had experience of this before?

    I'm thinking

    A) risk assess ...what type of things?
    B) plan appropriate activities.. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help

That's a hard one...too little to completely understand what's happening
Maybe try lots of sensory play where LO can use his hands for stimulation...playdoh, shaving foam, rice, bark clippings etc?
And lots of creative activities...painting, sticking, chalking etc...is that any help?!

And shower him with lots of affection too, poor little mite xx

My own little boy broke his leg last year on the first day of the summer holidays (aged 5). The first couple of days were quite traumatic as he was in some pain but after that, he learnt very quickly to get around on crutches and honestly it didn't make any difference. We just carried on as normal - he played with sand and water (we put a bag on his leg so he could go into the paddling pool). He wasn't able to walk very far so I used the buggy abit. I know it must be harder with a mindee but I would carry on as usual and make adaptations as you go with your normal activities (with mum's permission ofcourse) He used to crawl around the floor playing with his cars and diggers and still did lots of art and craft. He still got out and about.

it took 6 weeks til the cast came off - the beginning of the term and it wasn't too bad at all.

    Hope this helps

I was 9 when I broke my leg. I was plastered from toe to groin for 11weeks!
I climbed the stairs backwards and on my butt and came down the same way.
I had some one on front of me each time to begin with, but I soon got the hang of it and wax able to do it alone, amongst lots of stuff that I'd never have imagined! It amazing his you adapt!

I had a 12 month old come to me with one broken leg then again with two broken legs at 18 months.

She was able to walk with her casts on and came To mine within 3 days of it happening. She never complained or was unhappy just needed help to stand up then was fine even able to go up and down small steps.

I risk assessed had lots of indoor activities planed encase it rained as couldn't get casts wet. It was fine other children were fascinated by the casts. One thing to remember is that castes create a weak point and makes it more likely for the leg to break if they fall with the caste on. So calm games are a must.

they do adapt really quickly and learn to pull themselves around - just make sure all activities can be floor level

I had a little one come to me in plaster from toe to groin, he was only 2. If you didn't know he was in plaster you would never have known, it didn't stop him from doing anything things just sometimes took him a little longer.

My D'S learnt to crawl when his arm was in plaster! So they do adapt quickly. Along with other suggestions, I'd make sure to have permissions for calpol etc (if needed) as lo may be in pain. Also, the new fibre glass casts can't really be signed (like in the good old days lol!) but they do come in cool colours!
