Hi everyone, do you have a visitor record and, if you do, do you ask visitors to sign it?

it is not a legal requirement although I know a lot of cm's use one and it show's good practice. My DO recently said just make a note in your diary of any one in your house eg workmen, relatives, friends for coffee etc, no need for them to sign in and out

Ofsted always like to see you keep record of visitors

i have one and usually write all visitors in and out.

IF i (or they!) remember they sign it, if not, i at least have a record! my DO was happy with that!

I have never had one and never will. I see it as a bit of unnecessary paperwork.

Think for what purpose you do it? My house is never visited by anyone I don't know or hasn't made an appointment to come. No visitor is ever left alone with the children. I know where visitors are at all times so there is no problem if there needs to be an emergency evacuation.

Ofsted have never commented that are don't have one and in Sept I got outstanding for all areas of keeping the children safe.

I think it was one of those ideas that have come from Nurseries and similar and of course we are not like an institution that may have several visitors in the building at the same time and not all the staff be aware they are in the building.

I work in my home over which I have absolute control and knowledge.

Why would you make a note of when your own husband is in his own home? Has the world gone completely mad!

I agree it seems to be unnecessary paperwork. I can see in a nursery setting it would be appropriate but not in my home.

In 11 years and 4 Ofsted Inspections I have never been asked for a vistors book or been asked why I don't have one.

It is not a requirement to have one and Ofsted have no business to comment one way or the other. If they did and put anything about it on your report you could have the comment removed as 'Factually incorrect'.

Why are people so intent on creating a piece of un necessary paperwork? We have enough we have to do without creating more.

None here either, I only know one childminder that uses one. As long as you can show how you keep children safe when visitors are in the house then it is not necessary. (ie - by never leaving children alone with anyone not CRB checked)

i find it useful for looking to see when anybody came! ie washing machine repair man!

lol! It does have a use then I just write things like that in my diary so I'd look there rather than in a visitors book.

i don't use a diary, just a wall calendar and it would be on there, but find the visitor book so much quicker!

I had an inspection the same time as my friend, I didn't have one, the inspectors who were with me didn't mention it. My friend was told she must have one!

Well the inspector can't say that and I hope she challenged them because it is not a requirement to have one.

I attended some childminding training at the end of last year and it was recommended in relation to safe guarding ourselves against allegations regarding having visitors in the house. Before you all start disagreeing with me I am just saying what we were told it doesn't mean I agree with it. We were told we should make a note when our own teenage children have friends round in working hours, if another minder comes to visit etc. It's all about proving who was were and when if you have an allegation made against you.

I know its a world gone mad
