    Default Odd one

    Hi all

My new mindee still takes a bottle in the afternoon which mum provides ready made. She puts it in a thermos bag and has asked that I put it straight in the fridge whilst still warm.

When my 2 were little I was told to make the bottles, let them cool then put in the fridge because of bugs and things

Do I do what mum asks or ask mum to let me let the bottle cool first? I thought of doing a little permission form for this??

I would do as Mum asks just double check what she has told you. The trouble is everything changes so quickly she might have been to do this by doctors, health visitor etc.It might be a new formula she is taking and the rules are different.

The guide lines now are quite clear. They are written on the side of baby milk tubs so you could read one in the supemarket.

Bottles must not be made up in advance. I would not accept one that had.

I would ask mum to provide the bottle sterilized with or without the boiled water in and a dispenser with juat enough milk for that feed or a tub of the correct milk for you to keep and use when needed.

I ask all my parents to provide the milk unmade, as you do not know how long they have been made up, even if it is warm.

The reason you dont put any thing warm into the fridge is that it raises the temperature of the fridge and all of its contents.

The guidelines of formula milk say make up as required, do not store and discard within two hours. She should provide the milk and a sterilised bottle as rickysmith said.

some milk comes in ready mix cartons.

or as guidelines say - mix as needed. My mindee used to bring empty bottle and the container with compartments of measured milk powder for me to make up.

Wow that was a learning curve

I had no idea the guidelines had changed, its been quite a while since I have had to make up bottles.

Thank you all sooooo much for the information, I think I will email mum and tell her, but what do I do if she insists?

    Thanks again

Say it's against guidlines to do this and that you feel the LO may be a risk if you do. Surely it's no hassle for her to provide the powder seperately? She's already making up the bottles

    Hi ,
She can insist all she wants but you have to follow guidelines, not parents wishes, where health and safety are concerned. By warming things in the fridge all mindees and your own family are being put at risk.

Just explain you hadn't realised the latest guidelines had changed, but that now you are aware of them you must follow them. Your insurance wouldn't be valid either I wouldn't think, if someone got poorly as a result of this practise.

Maybe see if there's a leaflet somewhere to download and print off so you can share the latest advice with her. Be calm professional and confident when you explain to her how you will have to do things.

    Good luck

    best wishes,
    Wendy

My mindees mum does this too sometimes, she used to put in odd bottles of different amounts/tempretures I just pop them all in the fridge.

But now mindee is on cows milk and she still Kept putting milk in the bottle I have just had to tell her to please stop as I will just put fresh milk in it for her much safer that having it sitting around for ages.

Just tell her that you can't put warm milk into the fridge as it's unsafe to do so.

There are limits to following parent's wishes!

I used to make my dd's bottles up when I took her to nursery and was asked not to. I wasn't offended or upset by it. I used to make the bottles up to save them a job. Your parent might think the same, that she's saving you the hassle.

I found it so much easier for me not having to find the time on the morning to make them up.
