I have had a lot of trouble over the years getting accident insurance - gave up tbh as the premium was so high. I just have normal buildings and contents and take the risk - but it is a risk...

I use Homeminder ( they also insure my caravan on the same policy ) they are advertised in the ncma magazine who minds. I also use the motor minder car in surance and they were great when i had a car accident last year couldnt do enough to help !

I dont find the charges any more than other companies to be honest mt car insurance almost halved amazing or what !!!

I am with Churchill and they let you childmind with no extra cost. Best to shop around as a few do like to charge.

I've not advised my home insurers, I'm going to wait until it comes up for renewal and maybe do it then. Not sure if I will bother incase the insurance increases, we could do without any extra costs at the moment with the huge mortgage increase we are now having to pay out!

I will be interested to see what everyone else does although it seems from this that most people do inform their insurers with no extra cost - not sure I would have that luck though!

My house insurer wouldn't insure us so I went with the NCMA insurer's. It cost ab extra ten pound a month which ~I put htrough my books as it was a legitimate expense. I did this for a couple of years but to be honest I don't now as it rarely goes up by much.

A lot of insurance companies will continue to insure you but will not cover Sofa.s, carpets and accidental damage on lots of other different items.

The other thing is they fail to tell you that they have removed this coverage (as did mine....to say I was extrememly cross would be an understatement!!!) of such items and you do not find out until you want to make a claim.

So I would recommend that you check and clarify with your insurance companies that they haven't removed coverage because you are a childminder.

Its well worth making sure your insurance covers childminding... my house got broken into just before xmas 2006 and it was pretty gutting to find out i couldnt claim for anything on the ground floor as i hadnt told them i was a childminder. I couldnt work very easily either until i was able to afford new toys and equipment and almost gave up childminding altogether. I now use home-minder who are fantastic. They even cover toys left in your garden. It costs about £50 more a year than your usual insurance but supposing something happens? Is it really worth not spending that extra £50?

I called my house ins company yesterday, and my premium hasnt changed.

There were a couple of exclusions for when I was minding but they nothing thats going to make a huge difference.

I also called my car ins yesterday, and that is increasing by 55.00 for the next 6 months I have left.......not much I can do about this though as if I cancel they charge a 25% fee, so going to shop around when the renewal is due.

Hi Custard, is that for home insurance (Lloyds Tsb) ? The reason I ask is that we were with them for years and they said childminding made no difference, but a friend who worked for them asked me if I knew Iwas only covered as long as I never had more than 4 children at anyone time!!! Anymore than that it and policy is invalid

Best to put it in writing so you have proof that you've informed your insurers that you childmind.

I switched to Homeminder (Layton Blackham) and the policy was cheaper

I've also gone with homeminder as I had loads of probs finding anyone else to insure me.

My car insurance has never gone up though, I even put it on husbands policy just incase I ever need to use his car too.
