diversity?

hi

i had my pre ofsted visit im i am shocked as the lady said i need more diversity toys and equipment?

i have black asian and white toys dolls and puppets
i have fancy dress play with african dresses, fireman, doctor, indian
i have food from aorund the world in the home corner
i have book with ethnic people in
and have posters up showing disabitlity
have the balamory play house with figures
i have posters all around the house showing to wash hands, hello signs in different languages, wrold map, 5 aday poster, the everyone matters poster from share the world, something special poster
i have made a people who help us folder/book

yet she still said i need more puzzles and toy people to show this??
she gave me cataloge and it is like 25.00 for 1 puzzle and the people are so exspensive

i really thought i was doing well as i live in a mulitcultral house anyway

any ideas?

Early Learning Centre do Small World figures in sets that have figures from around the world, some wearing glasses etc.

John Crane Ltd Northampton NN3 9HG do reasonably priced Diversity toys. I have their child in a Wheelchair and ambulance and they come with dolls with bandages on their arms and legs.

I wouldn't worry to much it sounds as if you have a wide spread and got an inspector with a bee in their bonnet.

Do you have a local toy library? They usually have a good range of toys reflecting diversity and it won't cost you a fortune.

I have bought some dual language books from the local library for 20p each. They withdraw them from loan and sell them off, sometimes they may be ripped in places, but I do a Blue Peter job on them!

How about incorporating in some planning around festivals/countries. I recently did an African day - we looked at animals, made face masks, read a story based in Africa and had a menu based on African meals/snacks. sometimes I tie these in with special days - e.g. st Davids day/Welsh day.

I also bought some various musical instruments at the Eden Project which worked out much cheaper than through specialist catalogues.

yes i have musical instruments from aorund the world morrocan shakers african drum, wooden whistle etc
maybe i should start looking in libarys for books for sale or charity shops

how about you snap a few arms and legs off playmobil people, you can recreate a huge car crash or soldiers returning from war.

(Sorry, taking the pee, my bro off again to afghanistan and we keep telling him not to die, if you don't joke its just too serious and upsetting!)

if you are willing to part with the cash then the bear factory do a little wheelchair like one of the little collapsible strollers. its pricy but strong and durable. the kids love it as it fits normal sized dolls and teddies in for the children to push around
