Speech Issues

Hi, was wondering if any of you could offer some advice.

I am looking after a brilliant mindee who I noticed speech appeared to be behind and they seemed to be becoming frustrated by not being able to express themselves.

After discussions with mum and dad (they also had their concerns) the child was assessed by a speech therapist who agreed that there was a problem and we are all now learning techniques etc to help them.

This has been a massive confidence knock for the child and is clearly upset by this problem and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to some one to one things I could do with them that would assist their speech issues and promote confidence within them.

I have a little one with speech issues, he is now 2yrs and 8 months and for the past month we have been using PECS, his speech greatly improved as he doesn't get frustrated so much, the PECS just help hime ask for what he wants.

make sure you ask mum if mindee has had a glue ear test. I had a mindee under speech therapy but he'd not had a glue ear test. It turned out they were really bad and he had grommets in both ears.

might not be that but worth ruling out.

the speech and language therapist of the child I worked with recommended parents and I to go on a total communication course(free at the childrens centre) which I did, parents didn't and this helped all the children in my settting to communicate with this child and reduced his frustration. We were told not to coach the child, eg say to him, " say Hat" etc but to model the correct word/pronunciation and to recast what he said, but not draw attention to any mistakes, which could damage his self esteem. Also we were told to use one more word in a sentence than he used, at first I felt quite self conscious doing this because I was literally saying 2 word sentences but it did get better. Both his preschool key person and myself attended his speech therapy sessions so we could ensure we were doing exactly what was required. He still has problems but is now more confident, so hopefully your little one will be soon

Yes, we do this along side using the PECS, its the basis of the "every child a talker" programme.

I've asked his parents if I can go to his next Speech Therapy session as whilst it is all good and well being given exercises to do, I think I would feel more confident going to see the specialist and get them to talk to me as well about it as in all fairness he spends 10 hours a day with me Mon to Fri. I've also booked onto a specialist course that my early years support officer found for me designed for careers who have children with speech issues. Thank you for all your assistance.

It definitely helped going to the speech therapy sessions, it helped my confidence because I was worried about doing something wrong, and it ensured we all supported him in the same way

Hi, he is 3. He was born tongue tied and has had an op to correct this. However this has left behind speech issues.
