Very interesting reading, I was discussing this with a nursery worker on the safeguarding course yesterday. When I first registered in 1994 there were over 26 childminders within a 2 mile radius of me, I filled up within a matter of months, there were no private nurseries, just the school nursery. There are now 6 childminders in the same area and I have not had an enquiry since November 2008, I put it down to the number of nurseries in this area, there are 4 within a 2 mile radius including the school nursery, there is also the local sure start centre which opened last year. I personally don't think it is because of the EYFS, most of the childminders in this area gave up long before its implementation, although I do know that a few are not happy about it. Personally I agree that it allows us to be seen on the same professional footing as other childcare providers, yes it is a bit more paperwork, but that is down to how much you want to put into it really.

Also in some areas the birth rate has fallen dramatically in the last 10-15yrs. Both our village schools back in the late 80's and most of the 90's actually built extra classes, but for the last 6yrs or so they have laid empty as there are just not ENOUGH children around here and also as most of this area is quite affluent, lots of the parents stay at home with their young children and the older ones go to private schools.

I think it's down to number of nurseries too. even those I know hate (and don't really do) EYFS, haven't yet resigned because of it. Most of those who have its down to finances and having to go and get another job.
