    Default Eczema cream

If you had a child who needed eczema cream putting on everytime he has his nappy changed do you write it in the medication folder everytime you apply it. I have written permission of his parents to apply it.

I guess it depends if it's a prescribed one? B has prescribed eczema cream, but she applies it herself so I just keep it out of the reach of other children.

I put nappy cream on baby after every nappy change.

I have a permission form signed to say I must do it and I make a note in his book when it's done.

Hydrocortisone is different though... first because it should not be overused as it thins the skin and second because it is prescribed, rather than a nappy cream you go out and buy.

I would say as it is a prescribed cream you should write down that you have applied it and the times and get parents to sign every morning to say they want you to do it and every night to confirm it's been done.

are they aware of the long term damage hydrocortisone (if that's what you are using) can do??

I also suggest you wear gloves.

My daughter has had hydrocortisone on her face since she was 13 months old...she's now 6 and not needing it as much. At the excema clinic they said she could have this on every day for the rest of her life with no worries....guess some experts differ...she uses eumovate (clobetasone butyrate) on her body and we have been told to use this sparingly.I hate these creams but have tried everything "natural" and none work...so it's these or a screaming child.

Hydrocortosone should not be used in the nappy area...if i remember rightly...been a while since i nappy changed her!
    Come back David....

Ds's consultant is a specialist in skin conditions. He gives talks to other consultants.

He says that hydrocortisone has been misused and over used for decades and is now seen causing huge problems in older people who used it when they were babies.

It has thinned their skin so much they are now finding issues when out in sunlight and he attributes a lot of rosacea issues to hydrocortisone use.

He advocates hitting patches of eczema hard for a few days with a strong ointment, getting on top of it, then using emollient to keep it at bay. He feels this is much safer for the skin than putting something on day after day that isn't really doing the job.

Gosh I've gone on sorry! Just wanted to share latest advice with you

When I used to do this I had prior permission and written instructions eg as and when needed and amount size of ???

I then would write times and as directed by parent in the daily diary so parents knew when it had been applied. I also had a chart that I made on the computer with five days on it and put times and amounts on this and then parent signed this at he end of the week and this went in child's file just in case of any come back from parents.

hi.. I have had eczema since I was a child and now manage it most of the time.. my DS1 also had bad eczema as a babe.. I have to put Aveeno on my mindee when he has flair ups .. I'm using one of the NCMA forms.. the regular meds one I think.. I keep it under the daily register on a flip board so as stuff that needs a sig. can get done at same time.. Aveeno is prescribed but is oatmeal based/non-steroid. hope that helps... I've now switched my own diet to soya/goats milk based foods and my eczema has dramatically improved - just interesting how much our food can negatively impact our diets.. I've done the same for my own DS and his eczema is managed now and his tantrums have dramatically decreased too.. xx

I know when i use to sell hydrocortisone in the pharmacy we were really strict on selling it and warning. When my ds was prescribed it at 2 i hated putting on him and ended up asking for .5% it didn't help no suprise though as he has now been diagnosed with Actinic prurigo which is an allegry to sunlight. He now has to have eumovate on his face when it flares up and dermovate on his body. This is twice a day all the time he has the lesions if we dont use it they do not go before my son has picked them so they scar him. I hate to think what his skin will be like when he is older espe when you say that Sarah. We have been told by his specialist in London to apply it thickly as well!!!!! which i dont. Its so frustarting as we only have 4 months of a year where we dont have to use it on him.
