Default Question about a child who has Down syndrome

    Does anyone know -
If a child with Down Syndrome who is 7 coming 8 years old who has been held back a school year because of her special needs (so will be in year 2 rather than year 3 in september)- would she still be classed as an over 8 once she hits 8 or would she have to be classed as a 5-8 year old due to her still being at infants school in year 2, even though she is 8?

AFAIK it's always the chronological age they go by, but maybe a quick call to Ofsted would be in order to get definitive answer?

It is common practice round here for the local schools to hold any child with a condition such as Downs Syndrome, Aspergers, Global development delay etc back a year or in some cases two. Especially between Infants and Junior schools.

I care for a child of 6 who has downs syndrome, and another aged 9 who is not in mainstream but at a special school with global delay and autism.
Both are included under their actual age, but I give special consideration to them and have an assistant with me if we go out to have a better adult child ratio even though on paper i dont need to
    Hope that helps

I was under the impression that the child was classed by their actual age unless the level of care reqired would infact make them significantly younger ...ie a 10 year old with a mental age of 5, or a severley disabled 5 year old that required the same level of care as a toddler IYSWIM..I FULLY ADMIT THAT I'M NOT 100% ON THIS THOUGH!

I would think that in the circumstances you mention it would be the child's actual age...but if in doubt check!
