Charging for petrol

I had some potential customers today asking me if I charged for petrol for a school pick up. This hadn't ever even dawned on me but I said no but just wondered if anyone charges for petrol for school pick ups or whether you just suck it up as one of our costs?

Petrol and things we pay out for on the car are just one of our costs- we put it on our expenses and we need to factor it into our fees just like we do food/resources/cleaning materials etc etc.

If it wasn't a local school and involved some travelling then yes I would consider charging, but at the moment I don't.

I'm not sure but I think charging for fuel/ a journey might have car insurance implications- although all childminders need business insurance, I seem to remember hearing or reading somewhere that specifically charging for fuel makes it a taxi service and therefore a whole different issue.

Hi, Lal is correct. If you charge for petrol/ car use then from an Insurers point of view it is 'Hire and reward" not class one business use. I used to be an insurance broker many years x
