Default Keeping files on mindees that have left

Hi all, I wounded how long each of you keep your files and info on mindees that are no longer with you. When I had my inspection the inspector said they didn't request you to keep anything past a year but I was on a course at the weekend where I was informed that I had to keep info and records for 21 years ? Surely this can't be right.. Any one shed some light as to how long you keep your records, I would be most grateful.

I was told 21 years 3 months for accident and incident forms as they can claim compensation from you if anything arises from an accident
occuring in your care, but didn't think the other paperwork needed to be kept any longer than a year.

I would have though that you would have to keep attendance register, contracts, child record forms also for the 21 years also as this is evidence.

I am nearing my 100th child over 18 years and have boxes and boxes of paperwork stacked in my bedroom as live in a cottage with no storage. Sure it's a fire hazard!!!

I have a loft but things may get damp. Just not sure why the inspector said there was no requirement when there so clearly is...
