Next steps

Does anyone have any issues with next step planning? I gave myself a pat on the back for catching up with my observations from August until now for four kids!!! Now my issue is the next steps to most these observations. The EYFS guidance does not give much of an idea, I feel like I am in permanent brain freeze.

I'm the same need samples from observations of someone who is willing to share what to put. This is the part I don't like with childcare. It comes easey with some people. It I'm lost as well. We could do with a post to help people

Just keep it really simple don't over think, if they like balls, you could do any of he following like provide things they can use with balls like wrapping paper tubes to roll them down, different size balls, different texture balls etc. if they have learnt colour blue, introduced red or another colour, happy to help if you want to post some real life examples. The observation should lead you on naturally, what are they really interested in was it the ball? Or was it the way it bounced?

Think simple!

An example:Observation - "X recognised number 3 (her age) when playing with a jigsaw" Next step - "Look at numbers in the environment, provide resources with written numbers up to 5, continue playing games which encourage counting and number recognition"

Example 2: Observation - "A successfully fed herself shepherds pie with a spoon at lunch time". Next step - "Continue providing a spoon for A to practise her new found skill, introduce a fork when confident with the spoon".

Next steps don't need to be complicated. I have lots and lots of next steps that start with "Continue ......." Children need lots of practise to develop new skills and to be confident with them before introducing new things so a lot of our work will be about providing opportunities for repetition.

Like Rosebud says keep it simple.

It's the stuff you do with the children every single day when you respond to their play with other things you know they will enjoy

Do you use the development matters to make links?
Look down the left hand list and find the nearest match to make the link then look in the two right hand columns and use something from one of them to use as your next steps.
Keep it nice and simple.

not entirely sure what this means , inspector should have explained this further

im going to guess that skills based is specific skills you want to support the child in developing
eg , forming letters , skipping , using scissors , counting, sharing, retelling a story

whereas activity is more general
eg, baking, using playdough, painting , playing with sand and water,

so rather than a next step being
- encourage A to use more tools when crafting
you would say
- support A in using scissors competently

????? Im probably wrong but that would be my best guess

skills based next step is for example:

Pick a development matter such as - Begins to make comparisons between quantities - Mathematics -

And to do this you will do sorting and matching activities

or PD skill - Can kick a large ball

so to do this you will practise playing football and ensure that there are balls to play with in the garden....

For my next steps, I put what i want them to do/what they want/like feeding themselves and then how or what i will do to sopport them doing it. xx

Skill based probably means something like if they are jumping next step learn hopping etc
