    Question Charging Miles

I live in a rural village and have an LO who goes to Nursery 7.8 miles round trip away. I have made my mind up that due to the ever rising cost of fuel that I need to start passing the costs of transporting this child to nursery on to the parents. Silly I know but I have been absorbing the transport costs up until now.

How much should I charge? I was just going to charge 40 pence per mile do you guys think this is ok?

I don't think you can legally charge for car journeys as then you'll need to register as taxi (for want of a better word)!

You can't charge for transport costs as it will make you a taxi and that is against the terms of your car insurance
The only thing you can do is charge an extra hour to cover the petrol costs OR just claim it as an expense at the end of the tax year.
Some people charge more per hour for people that require 'driving around'.

I would just put the price up by the mileage as you can't openly charge mileage to the parents ... 7.8 miles times £0.40 comes up to £3.12 hmm depending how long the child is with you that may be a very high hourly increase ... but then it's business and you have to make money too.

I would just charge parents an extra hour for transporting child.

    Default mileage

    Hi

I was told on my ICP course to charge 45p per mile, is this not correct then?
Should i be charging for the time the pick up takes me rather than the miles covered? Dont want to be doing something wrong but dont want to lose out either

The amount we can claim on expenses for tax is 40p per mile

I would charge a higher hourly rate if there was a long drive to a Nursery or school and charge for my time. You are on very sticky ground if you charge petrol or mileage money because it is seen as Hire ans Reward which is acting like a Taxi.
