    Default Holiday and sick pay

    I had decided to do:

    Child/parent holiday- Full fee
    Child/parent sick- Full fee

    My holidays- no fee
    My sick- no fee

I had a parent come to visit and there children already go to a childminder but she is quitting, she said that at the other childminders she does this and would I consider doing it:

    Child/parent holiday- Half fee
    Child/parent sick- Half fee

    My sick- Half fee
    My Holidays- Half fee

What is the pros and the cons of doing it this way?

    Thanks Kelly

I think you would have to write into the contract a set number of weeks for their hols or they could take advantage.
On the plus side you would at least get something if you were sick and it would be nice to not be broke after a holiday

Im doing half fees for both parties holidays. I guess if you do it so your holidays are free and theirs full pay you can control your income a bit more as if you need the money you don't take time off and it doesn't matter if the mindees do.

Can I ask what you are classing as holiday? Does it have to be a whole week and anything else is classes as occational days off or is it any time off?

When i first started minding I did half fee for parent's/child's holidays and days off but found that sometimes children were going to different friends and relations and I was left short of money. I then decided to write into the contract "up to 4 weeks holiday 1/2 fee anything after full fee". I now charge full fee for all children's days off and sickness as you were planning. If you did decide to accomodate the parent's request I would definately put a 4 week cap on the 1/2 fee or you could end up out of pocket if there are willing friends/family at certain times. There have been some cases from members on here where a relative has come to stay for several weeks/months and they want to care for the child - could you afford to be at 1/2 fee for a long time?

I think if you are going down the 1/2 and 1/2 route you need to put in your contract how many weeks each party can take. Otherwise mum could be off for 10 weeks and you would only get half of that.

Don't like half and half myself.

I had to do some major backtracking - I wrote down 3 weeks holiday and noever thought to clarify what a week is. This particular family use me 2 days a week so I had to write to them and say that under those circumstances one week is equivalent to two working days so 3 weeks is six days..... Could have been difficult otherwise, I might never have seen the child by the time she had three weeks and I had three!

    I wouldnt do it personally

I think your own idea was the right way its the way I do it

Why should you change what you want for a parent ?

I wouldn't back down either for one parent as you need to have the same terms & conditions for all parents

    Hi

    I always do

Parent/child holidays = full fee (any amount of weeks)

Parent/child sickness = full fee (any amount of days/weeks)

My Holidays = Full fee (4 weeks per yr)

My sickness = 1 working wk (i.e if I look after a child three day a wk I'm entitled to 3 days sick pay per yr)

No parent has ever question this as yet
