I can ... statements

Hi!

I have my own daughter and a boy mindee who are going to be 3 in January / February next year. I will be completing the learning journal as the mindee will be starting a playgroup.

I am starting to write down some 'I can ...' statements, such as I can use a spoon and fork, I drink using a beaker without a lid, I am potty trained etc. It is going to be so good to see all the things he can now do and he has only been with me since January. When he first came at two years old he had never used a spoon as his nanny hated mess so used to feed him! That was one of the first things I had to change as it was wrong to stop him being more independent. It also took months for him to get used to messy things. Now he will ask to do some painting and loves putting his apron on! It is so nice sometimes to take a step back and look at how far he has come.

Does anyone know if there is a document that could help me by putting down areas which will be of concern for those in a nursery? Am thinking that this will be of more use to them, than reading through all of my notes in a hurry!!

For areas where they have difficulty you could write something on the lines of I am trying to...., I am working towards..... or, I like help with... or, I struggle with... and need support.

I made a similar form to use with children from 2 years til going to school, it is a tick list with a date to use in conjunction with doing proper observations - just easier sometimes to refer to list than flicking through observations to see for eg: how many piece puzzle child was able to do.

I have on mine things like, can count to 5 or 10, can name colours, can recognise first initial of name or whole name, can do tray puzzles, 2 piece, 4 piece etc, can drink from open cup, potty training, toileting, can take coat and shoes off, can put coat and shoes on, use a tissue, pedal a tricycle, draw a circle or a line, trace over name, use scissors, sing nursery rhymes and which ones, throw, kick or catch a ball, jump with 2 feet etc

It is proving useful for collating info for 2 year check.

I have been using "I Can" sheets for many years , usually do one maybe every 6/9 months , mine used to be just plain but now since EYFS i have put the areas of learning , but you can really do it either way .

Its a good way to see progress or achievements , when the children are older i let them do one of their own,without the learning areas, about 10 lines long, and chose their own picture. They love to say what they can do , some very random things come out, but i write down what they say !!

I have used 'I Can' statements for years and find them very positive and affirming.
