Default changing the colour of flowers with food colouring

    Evening everyone,

Has anyone used food colouring in water to alter the colour of flowers? I tried it the other week but it failed miserably! I put quite a bit of red food colouring in a jar of water and added white flowers, after a few days there appeared small red lines in the petals and I thought they would keep changing but nothing happened. I tried green food colouring in another jar of water but nothing happened with that one at all.
I used chrysanthemums, do you think a different flower may have had better results or do I just need more food colouring in the water?
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Thanks x

It works (well it did for me) with daffodils and red dye

Think I might give it another go with carnations.
    Daffodils and red - unusual!

My sons class did this as an experiment. Not sure what flowers they used but they were white. They did half thw flowers with red food colouring and half with blue. The red food colouring only worked slightly and they flowers died quite quickly......but the blue worked brilliantly, the whole flower turned blue and they lasted a good few days longer than the red. Very interesting. I am going to try this expereiment with my mindees using other colours too x

make sure you cut the stem as it may have been blocked. It works really well as an experiment with leafy celery too

We always use carnations and it works really well. We used purple, red and blue food colouring last time. It looked like nothing was happening and then all of a sudden they changed.
