I have a butterfly net with 5 butterflies in, I had worked out that they would be ready to be released yesterday or at the latest today, but the weather is too cold, wet and windy here and they probably would not survive. So sadly the children will miss them being released this year, I will release them tomorrow as the weather is meant to be better.

I will take pictures for the children, this week they have been looking at the pictures of when we released them last year and also their own butterfly lifecycle book full of their own artwork.

I am absolutely fascinated, but one parent can't cope with the caterpillars and another is petrified of the butterflies especially if they all start to flutter and fly.

If it has worked attached is the first three stages of the caterpillar/butterfly's life. I shall see if I can add the next stages in another post.

It is amazing, the kids do love it. I am sad they have missed them being released, they love to wave them off. The picture of the butterfly in the grass is one we released last year when the weather was a bit more spring like!

I may get some more for June when, hopefully, the weather is nicer.

I did this a couple of years ago - I had to get hubby to transfer the caterpillars to the net as I just couldn't handle them. The kids did love it though and were fascinated when they hatched. I took the net into the local school and let the children there release them (didn't have to deal with them flapping myself then!).

    Keep smiling!

Great timing guys. The LO i have is absolutely fascinated with mini beasts. She went to butterfly world with her parents recently so after half term we're going to start a mini beasts topic. After seeing this i've just ordered one, from yellowmoon site not this one, as it was cheaper and i got some arts and crafts activities from there too.

We did it last year and the kids were fascinated. One came out of the cacoon and had a folded up wing. We left it and it did survive but couldn't fly. This year we have 5, three are hanging up nicely and two are on the floor. Should be ready to release end of next week. It is good fun and the LO's like to check on their progress regularly

I order one of amazon on Thursday and it arrived today. It cost me £11.50 free delivery. In the box was a voucher for the caterpillars that I could order online but I had to pay another 2.99 postage. Looking forward to them arriving but they can't dispatch them till Wednesday

The photo's look great! Can they be done throughout the summer? I thought it might be getting too late. That's assuming we get a summer at all!!
I might give it a go, my little ones would love it.

I just assumed it wouldn't be too late yet as we normally have caterpillars on the veg in the garden and nothing's big enough yet.
