    Default Does this sound right?

I have done my first tax return (2012-2013). I earn't £3000 and paid out £1500 in expenses. Had to pay over £200 tax. Surely this can't be right, can it! When I did my pre-reg course I was told that all expenses are offset against my tax. So most childminders don't pay tax as all expenses together come to more than the 20% of tax you have to pay.

We're you employed for some of the tax year aswell?
The personal allowance is 8000something for 2012/2013 so if all you earnt was 15000 net income you shouldn't pay any tax, however if you were employed and earning elsewhere during that period that is added on to what you earnt through childminding.

Are you sure you used the correct website (HMRC.gov.uk I think). There are some dodgy ones who charge you! If that is your only income for the year you shouldn't have to pay any tax!

The charge isn't related to childminding as you have a tax allowance of £8105. You must have income from somewhere else that has used this. Have another look at your expenses as I think you can claim more if this is your first year.

Doesn't pay to leave it to the last minute ):

YES MAKE SURE IT IS THE CORRECT WEB SITE, I got tricked and filled all mine in - got the the end and it asked me for £150.00 to submit, being from yorkshire and rather frugal at the moment - I checked and realized I had filled in on the wrong web site. But I must say they are very triksy I could have sworn it was the gov web site.

You need HM Revenue & Customs: Home Page
