Ok that is Christmas and New Year out the way... On to Chinese New Year :)

What sort of activities can I do for Chinese New Year? I am new to CMing and this is my first one and I actually can't wait. I have got find out what animal year the children are and make masks. Make chinese foods with the kids, decorate dragons and now my mind has gone blank... to be fair I have only been thinking about it for 10 minutes while the kids are making "My Christmas 2011" pictures and DS asked "What next mum, Easter?" lol

Its the year of the Dragon. We will be decorating dragons, making lanterns( with dragons cut out and tissue paper over the cut outs) and decorating red envelopes which I will put some gold chocolate coins in. Must not forget the fortune cookies. I hve just after schoolers so it will all depend on time and what mood they are in when they come back from school.

I have in the past made animal masks, chinese drums, animal cuts outs stuck on straws to make puppets. :)

Done most of the above at some point, also made a big flag of China for the display board and got my pre schoolers to copy it and talk about the stars, colours etc., schoolies did it aswell just for fun!
Also did a little 'certificate' each, cut out pictures of their Chinese animal, a brief description and their name in Chinese writing, they stuck it all on red card and decorated it with gold glitter.
Read the story of how the animals got their years, used Ni hao Kai-lan to speak some Chinese, had chopsticks and woks to play with, visited a local garden centre which has a chinese style display garden with pagodas and bridges, etc.

Not on Chinese New Year yet as doing Australia Day first!

Ah but Chinese New year is early this year - 23rd Jan and Australia Day is the 26th!! However, they are not doing any of the celebrations in London until 29th Jan! Most of it is going to go over the heads of the babies I look after, but my son loves Chinese New Year.

Sorry if I have repeated anything already said I haven't read whole thread

Hand print dragon pictures - yellow for body and green for head and legs - see Activityvillage

Print off some multicultrial chinese themes from Sparklebox for a display

Buy some chopsticks from ebay (only about £2 for 10)

Purchase some fortune cookies (can get from most supermarkets this time of year or ask your chinese shop/restaurant)

Make chinese lanterns - easy to make - see activity village.

Buy some chinese noodles.

Print some chinese words from internet (sparkle box) and use as place mats for the day

Print off ever child's chinese Year (mine is year of the goat (:() for example) and use as book marks for child's diary

Borrow books about china from the library

I don't bother with any of the multicultural festivals. We "do" Christmas and Easter. For the rest of them, the very little ones are too little to know what I'm going on about and wouldn't know Chinese new year/ eid/ diwali if it slapped them in the face, and the older ones get more than enough info from school. We just concentrate on general playing, reading, running about!

Have to admit I'm inclined to think the same way!! My oldest littlie was 2 in Nov and the other 2 are only just 12 months, so haven't a clue!!! and by the time the schoolies have come home from school, had a snack and a drink its almost time for some of them to go home (I only have some of them for 1 hour) or for me to feed the babies. I may just print out a few pictures that they can colour in - (if they are interested) - I know 1 won't be he doesn't like anything unless its Ben 10 or Transformers !!!

Its a shame really, in the past I have had more older mindees who have really enjoyed Chinese New Year, Australia day etc. but Ive got a 5 year old and a (just) 7 year old who would much rather just play and the babies are too small!!

I do it mainly for my own two and then if the three little ones I am looking after are interested then I follow their lead. We are doing Dragon handprints, puff the magic dragon, George and the dragon, food (loads in Aldi at the moment) and I have printed off some dragon colouring pages.
