are they actually giving away bird seed? Only what I am seeing is a 'free' information pack with 10% food and feeders.... i may be missing something there!

I believe they are giving seeds away as it is

The RSPB’s Feed the Birds Day which takes place on Saturday 29 October 2011.
A great idea as is shows us what we can do to help birds and other garden wildlife through the winter.

Birds really need our help as the clocks go back and the nights draw in. This year the RSPB is asking people to ‘Come Dine with the Birds’ and host a wildlife garden party, which I believe is a great idea and one that we will be doing and involving all the LO's.

Thanks for the link

Just wanted to warn people that after feeding the birds last year I ended up with rats in the garden and it took ages to get rid of them. (I have a small city garden) I will stick to watching birds at the park.

Thanks for the info, just sent off for a pack. I always like to involve the children in caring for birds/wildlife in my garden. I remember last winter when we had that cold snap, I had to keep going out with fresh water - it just kept freezing.
I must be having a 'blonde moment' but can anyone explain to me how the birds are affected by the clocks going back?

I wonder if it's because birds feed at dusk and at daybreak. If it gets darker earlier & stays darker longer in the morning they have less time to feed & have to go for longer nights without food?
