Hi all,
just a quick query?

when you all signed over to become self employed, did you start paying you NI contributions straight away, or when you got your special UTR number through.

I put myself down as being self employed from 11 july 2011, I should have the UTR number though very soon (hopefully), but I haven't started work yet and haven't paid any NI contributions yet. or would I also need to set up a special number also for the NI contributions too.
I have my NI number from the age of 16.

can anyone enlighten me on this.
Thanks
Tanya

It depends how much you expect to earn from self-employment this tax year - you may not need to pay anything. Have a look at this link

you may not need to pay anything

... but it is probably in your interest to, see here (http://www.mranchovy.com/information/class-2-national-insurance-small-earnings-exemption).

I think my best bet is to just pay the class 2 NI, as not sure how much it will be this year, but don't think it will be under the small earning exempt NI tax thing.
so my next question will be...??
do I start paying it now, or wait until my UTR from the tax office has come through - which may be another 1 week or 2.
Thank you
Tanya
