I wonder if you could offer some advice about dolls.

I've seen a few multicultural dolls for sale in magazines and on the internet but...should I be looking to buy ones that are anatomically correct? I have seen some which have soft fabric bodies so could be dressed as boys or girls in their respective multicultural costume.

What kind do you girls have?

Thanks

Hi Nix

I have a mixture.

I have some that do have all their bits if you know what I mean :D but also have a load that don't.

I don't think it really matters to be honest as long as you show both boy and girl from difficult cultures.

I have a range of beanie dolls of various colours... and the others I've picked up from charity shops etc as I've spotted them. Dora is good for multicultural. :D

Hi Nix

You can use the Equal Opps shop who are 'Forum Friends'

http://www.theequaloppshop.co.uk/

Or

http://www.kidslikeme.co.uk/

I have got a list of other suppliers but they are bookmarked on my main computer and I am sitting on my laptop at the moment.....will look for them later for you.

To be honest though........I tend to pick up a lot of mine from carboots and charity shops as it could end up saving you a fortune.

I also buy a lot from ebay......type in Multicultural as an ebay search.....you would be amazed at what comes up

HTH :D

Mmm hadn't thought about beanie dolls or considered Dora, I'm not very 'up' on the current thing that the kids like, although I have one who's mad about High School Musical.

Thanks Sarah I'll check out Dora.

I also have a mixture of boy & girl dolls, with white & black skin tones.

Only problem is, I don't have any boy clothes so he has to dress as a girl  :D :D

Mine came from eBay and the charity shop my mum manages. I've had some lovely stuff from both.

Hi,

Have you seen my thread on multicultural handmade dolls?
Try this web link to ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150239399227&ih=005&category=91392

This lady has gourgous handmade, fairtrade dolls in both boys and girls with traditional dress.

Click onto the ebay page and ask her to send you the photos of both sex dolls.

Am awaiting mine through the post...

Much nicer than the mass produced ones, in my opinion.

Where do TPTB ( the powers that be!!) stand on national dress though? We were always taught at college, and further training after with my DO, that we shouldn't encourage stereotypes - so my ethnic dolls are just dressed in "normal" clothes.

Would this be then frowned upon?

my dolls star the week off in clothes and 10 mins after the children have got hold of htem they are all without clothes. The Chinese boy doll (with bits) is usually in a dress and looks like a girl whatever he is dressed in.

I think I would explain to children that the National Dress is for special occasions when people dress up and celebrate something and that the rest of the time they wear their ordinary clothes. Although 'ordinary clothes' for some countries will still be very different to ours, such as a Sari. :)

Just found these cute dolls:

Best Friends in the World Ethnic Dolls - Set of 3 (http://www.rubyiris.com/product_info.php?products_id=425) - 'Say hello to India, Anna & Sofiya! They are best friends in the world and can all hold hands. Sold as a set of three in a pretty little carry case. The product tag includes 'child friendly' information about the countries the dolls come from and can also be re-cycled as a bookmark. Made by a small fair trade cooperation in Sri Lanka. Every child should have a set of these dolls, an adorable set of multicultural dolls designed in Britain. The aim is to teach young children about the world, geography, ethnic groups, equality and that we can all be friends whatever our ethnic background. This toy is an ideal gift before a holiday abroad and is an excellent teaching aid in schools and nurseries.'

You don't have to have everything and not all at once!

Don't panic!:)
