I have just started childminding and I wondered how you all did your initial observations?

Do you just list what you have seen your mindee doing e.g walks with frequant tumbles or do you list what they can do and then write a section about how the settled in e.g tearful coupld of days esp around sleep time etc etc???

Thanks

I do both. I write what I see along with any comments from parents when I've mentioned things / asked about things. I write quite a lot initially as I'm getting to know the child then afterwards I move onto the "normal" obs after that.

I write about what they can physically do, their speech, their position in family and how they get on with siblings etc

I keep it positive so, for example, if a young child is slightly developmentally delayed instead of writing 'cant sit up yet' I would write 'working towards sitting unaided, sits beautifully on mums lap with support'

Hope that helps x
