 ... on a serious note, if you are putting dates in your diary and you are planning on transferring money from your bank in the normal way then you will have to do that on Thursday 26 January 2012 so that it clears on Tuesday 31st - HMRC cannot accept Faster Payments Service payments that go through the same day.

I've set up a direct debit budget plan so it's payed over 9 months, still a lot more to pay than last year though:( I haven't even earned much more, couldn't have spent as much I suppose - all that saving for Florida:D

I do mine by debit card on the 31st and it instant on the account.

It goes instantly from your account Debbie, but it doesn't get to HMRC for 3 working days as it says here (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/payinghmrc/selfassessment.htm#6).

They may have waived the interest in the past if it was a small amount 3 days late, but there is no guarantee they will in the future.

No but it shows up as dated the 31st Jan because that is when the system has the money approved and the bank sets it aside

Are you saying that it shows on your statement from HMRC as dated the 31st Jan? That is not what usually happens.

Yes because I use their bill pay service

Well yes, but the official line on that (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/payinghmrc/selfassessment.htm#6) is "A BillPay payment takes three bank working days to reach HMRC."

HMRC don't always say what they mean or mean what they say of course

I have always done mine like this Debbie and the same in July and I have never had the slightest problem. IR acknowledge receipt of the payment and I have never been charged interest or a fine. The only time I was fined was last year when I paid on 31st Jan but didn't file my Tax Return. It was filed in June and they refunded my fine and I didn't even ask for it, it just appeared as a credit on my account.

If they did not accept this then we would all have to pay 4 or 5 days early which makes the 31st deadline pointless. My Accountant has never said there is a problem doing it the way we do.

The money doesn't get to the HMRC for 3 days but when it gets there it shows as 31.01 or 31.07.
