I was on a course recently and some of us minders were talking about our local council early years team.

In our area there are a list of courses we have to attend that are mandatory to the EYT but not by OFSTED and we were all wondering what powers do the EYT have if we dont have THEIR mandatory courses under our belt ?

Can they (EYT) stop us from minding or is that only down to OFSTED ?

Also we were discussing what we are allowed Under Data Protection to show the EYT when they visit us to check our paperwork or yearly visits.

Personally i refuse to show then any of the childrens Learning Journeys or personal Files unless i have the parents written permission for that particular visit, but other CM's show them everything. So were were wondring ?

The other Cm's aren't on the forum so i said i would ask and feed back when i next see them.

Any ideas/opinions ?

I think it's only down to Ofsted.

Our LA also have a set of 'compulsory' courses to attend within six months of registration, however every single one I have booked on has been cancelled by them. It may be that they request any grants you have been given back, but seeing as they cancelled the courses on me they can whistle for anything they want back from me.!

They have a duty to offer us support and have to prove that they do to acquire funding. Can't see how they can force you to attend any courses not compulsory from ofsted.

You should only share personal details (includes learning journeys) with anyone including early years team if you have written authority from parents. Ours give us a form for parents to complete.

the LA can raise care issues with Ofsted so in a roundabout way they could have you suspended though the ultimate decision would sit with ofsted.

mmmmm we are on networks and the "Directory of providers and we can be kicked off ...and this would mean we are not allowed to recieve the grant for the 2yr olds or the 3-4 yr olds.. or be sign posted for the teen parent or specialist chidcare.

as for stopping you working they can only contact ofsted and state their case,

as for the learning files, our network co-ordinators can and do look at them but dont use any of the info,,, they are just looking to see if we need any help in completing them like areas of next steps etc, we do ask for permission to show files to our co-ordinators and parets are ok with this,

hope this helps

None of us are on the network so not recieving any funded children.

We have checked with OFSTED and the compulsory stuff on the LA list are not compulsory with OFSTED so it would make us think what could the LA do apart frm ask for Grant goven toys back ?

Some interesting responses so far though !!

arrrr your LA gets grants which they spend on you through toys and training so they want you to attend training to get the resources too deliver a quality childcare, its all part of delivering quality care as the standards slipped a few yrs ago and b4 EYFS, blackpool has networks and also we have to sign up to their steps to quality framework (we all used to be in the ncma quality assurance scheme but its too costly for our LA to pay for) most of the training is good and most of us (well the same 40 cms) attend, they still shouldnt be able to stop your registration...

Yeah they had a grant for toys and equipment which was shared out throughout the CM's i think. They assessed what each minder needed, some minders got lots and others got nothing ?

Although they do hold it over us as were constantly reminded the equipment is THEIRS and if were not using it to give it back ? ! x
