I had to ring Ofsted today to chase up a variation (which they granted :) ) and when I had the chap captive on the phone I asked him if, as childminders, we were required to have sight of the child's birth certificate to determine parental responsibility or for any other reason.

The answer was plain and simple: NO

He said local authorities may wish us to see them for funding reasons etc but Ofsted do not need us to see them at all.

Hope that clears up any confusion with regard to birth certificates and parental responsibility
