View Full Version : Just been told minders should be at least half price of the nursery

Had a call about a possible full timer with 55 hours of childcare a week. I gave her a very generous (in my opinion) discount of 20% which worked out over £55 less for me a week which makes well over £200 less a month. In return I got 'the local nursery quoted me that price. I was expecting half of that from a minder.'
What the heck? She was expecting me to work for £2 per hour and include everything in the price. I wonder if she'd be happy to take £2p/h herself ....

The reason the nursery can charge that is because they are allowed huge numbers that we can't compete with (an yes I know they have staff wages etc, but most of them still make a profit that we probably don't)

LOL clearly by someone who has no idea that we do all the same things as nursery AND take our children outside AND do all the paperwork etc in our own time which we don't charge them for! Never ceases to amaze me what people think we will work for/what we do all day!

Cheeky woman - she'd best get herself down to the bargain that is the nursery then!

Methinks you've had a lucky escape! :D

IMO we should get more money than nurseries as we are able to provide much more one on one time and tailor our activities to individual children!!

Polly2 I agree, I can't understand it at all.
My dentist just told me she pays £750 per month to a nursery for 12 days care.
The only reason I have ever heard for choosing nurseries over childminders that made any sense to me was that they didn't want the child to form a close bond with a childminder. I would like to argue with that but I probably would have felt the same had I needed to use childcare for mine...

theres also no need to find holiday & sickness cover & the aspect of being socialised with more children insted of just 1 or 2.......these are the reasons i would pick a nursery over a CM if i had just the 1 child to find care for.

i'm a childminder but if i had to go back to work short days or 9-4 or part time and my son was 3plus i would send him to a nursery as i believe it's good for children that age to be with peer same age and nursery has some equipement better suited for this age

BUT i would never put a under 3 in nursery all day as i don't trust them LOL!!!!

as a mother i'm a nightmare at trusting people with my kids.

now that i'm a trained cm i'm scared at some of the people who are aloud to childmind!!!

I have only a couple of lady i would leave my children with.

Thing is if you read anything on attachment thats exactly why childminders are best because children NEED to form that close bond with someone when mum is not there

Yes I agree, I know you're right. As I mum I admit that I would find that difficult though, that's all. I'm glad I never had to make the choice.
