do i still claim expenses?

bit confused so if anyone can advise that would be great, im going to do my first ever tax return on line (starting minding July 2010) so thought id do it before 31st March 2011 (first question - is this the right time to do it?)
2nd question - during this time I have earnt something silly like 3k - do i just put that down and as its under the tax threshold leave it at that? or do i still need to put outgoings down?

Current tax years runs from 6th April 2010 til 5th April 2011 ~ you cannot submit your return until the end of the tax year, secondly you still need to put your expenses down even though your gross figure is under the tax threshold because if you do not have any expenses this financial year it would look rather odd to start putting them down next year.

plus once you take expenses off you may have made a loss which can be carried over to the next tax year. This is what happened to me in my first year of minding.
