Just after abit of advice, I have an 18month old who isnt making any attempts to speak , he giggles a little with quite alot of encouragement and cries when he hurts himself but other than that he makes no sounds at all.

All of my other little ones are very vocal. Mum is a little worried and I did say to her I'm sure it will come in his own time but is there anything you can suggest to help him along???

Thanks x

Just keep talking and singing to him and turn off the TV and radio

I've got an 18 month who isn't talking yet. As long as she's happy, I just encourage by talking a lot to her, hopefully she'll start soon xx

Blaze I have a 22mth old who is the same. We are wait for him to be seen by the specialist nurse who hopefully will refer to a Speech Therapist but the nurse keeps cancelling his parents appointments

He has a very vocal older sister and we suspect this hasn't helped and boys have a tendancy to talk later than girls, it is not uncommon for them not to speak until they aer 3yrs.

We do lots of singing, sounds so BBBB, SSSSS, DDDD etc I use the sound buttons which he is enjoying and this last week although he is not saying words he did copy a BBB and has been very vocal so the stratagies are having an effect. He has great understanding and has no difficulty with communicatiing exactly what he wants. He knows a lot of his colours and some numbers so is generally progressing very well.

Blaze would you mind sharing if I pm my email address?

Little Stars I wouldn't be overly worried at 18mth tbh.

I posted something similar about my then 26 month old mindee who was hardly talking. Came back after the Xmas holidays and he is now talking in full sentences! It does come, it's like they are trying to get it right in their head before saying anything:thumbsup:

Blaze , That would be great but your inbox is full up! :D

Im not too worried just thought if there was something I could start now then it may help it not to become a problem in the future iyswim , Mum was a little worried but I think thats because he does'nt really make any sound at all other than the odd giggle and crying .

Thankyou all for your replies xx

Hi, Im a speech & language therapy asst, like the other girls said I wouldn't worry too much as the child is still very young, most therapists don't really show too much concern untill they are heading towards three. The important things is lots of good language modelling but keeping it simple for example, if the child is playing with a car you can model 'blue car', short and simple phrases. Feely bags are really nice ideas as the children can have a little explore in the bag as we as adults can use simple language to talk about the language and develop language. The other important thing to remember is when the child does start using more vocab the words may be pronounced wrong but don't correct as in their head they are saying them correct, so for example they may say 'tar' for 'car', and you would just model back yes it is a car. Hope you find this helpful. xx

my son is 27 months and says nothing, not mum not dad or anything he talks in his own language and gets his message accross using his own sign language but it is very frustrating for both of us especially now i have a 5 week old baby. He has been diagnosed with glue ear but we are not sure if that is effecting his speech or not, Im just waiting for an appointment with the language and speech therapist but if anyone has useful tips please share

thanks

I had a little boy who was generally very quiet and didnt even attempt speech. He had glue ear and once treated his speech came on really quickly.

I have another who was very slow but wasnt referred till he was 2.5. He has speech dyspraxia and now has weekly speech therapy and is coming along well.
