Hi,

Just got my first NI bill, have looked and am earning well under the limit for contributions but they say not paying may affect pension, maternity allowance etc, So am bit unsure...

Am earning so little, about £100 a month it seems a lot to pay even the £28 a quarter but on other hand may need benefits in future...fairly certain there won't be any state pension by time I retire though!

What do you do? Any advice?

Get a pension forecast... see what your pension will be when you hit 75 or whatever age it will be by the time you retire.

Then decide whether you might need benefits such as maternity in the future.

If your pension is ok, you have young children at home (you are legally allowed to exempt from NI if you have young children - it is called 'home responsibilities protection - they pay NI for you) and you do not need benefits then apply for a low earnings exemption.

Hth :D

Hi, I'm in the same boat as you. I rang the NI office and they said it's best to pay if you can afford to, and so I've paid the bill, but like you I only earn a small amount each month.
