I'm going to go the whole hog and make grow our own a huge project here this year! Has anyone got any ideas for good books or resources that I could put into a 'grow our own' story/topic sack/box?

I must be having a blank this morning as so far I can think of Olivers Vegetables! Isn't there a Peppa Pig book too? I already have a Jack and the Beanstalk story bag which I can use as well.

What about 'The enormous turnip'?

I read this to my mindees and they all get given a character and help to pull the turnip out of the ground.

I just looked at this and it is good but made me think that we could do the story and make the resources with the children as an activity then use the resources in the story sack

Brilliant idea. I found it looking for the book as its a good idea as we grow our own veg. I did say to other half that you could do it yourself but its handy for when short on time. Do it with mindees and its even better. Looking at the books brought up ace memories. Books the kids have now arent always as good as what we had (i'm 31). xx

I love this story too,,,,,, I googled the story title and it came up with lots of free resources that could be done with the children,,,, thanks for your idea about the story sack,, think in march I will do the story as a theme and make the sack with the children,,we have an allotment which the children are going to be taking part in a lot more this year,, we got it last year but have spent this year making raised beds ect for it so its easier to maintain.

You could add sequencing cards, either Tpet or ****** have some.

If you've got younger children you could make a shaker with a seeds or beans inside a clear plastic bottle.

Cress is good to grow as it has quick results. You could add a little grow your own kit.

I popped into M&S today and found 'The Enormous Turnip' book for £3.

They do other titles as well at £3 each or they do 4 different box sets at £9.50. One box set includes this book along with Jack & the beanstalk, the 3 little pigs & The elves & the shoemaker.

I just got a book called Eddie's Garden by Sarah Garland and it's lovely - it's a story about a boy who wants to grow his own veg, and then it's got child friendly instructions for growing different things!
