I only found out about schemas recently, and when I did immediately realised my little boy has once for transporting!!

Just been reading a bit about it and I'm really interested by it.

It can be frustrating, like how he wants to take everything off his plate at lunchtime and put it on the floor  and when I'm hanging up the washing he likes to take things off the airer and put them back in the basket :D And I find things in strange places sometimes, like the bin!!

But after the split second of 'TUT!' I just think it's so cute!!

Just wanted to share that and also wondered if anyone has any advice or ideas how I can use it!

Thanks

ah bless you hon, it is cute isn't it. I would provide lots of different means of him transporting.

Trollies, trucks and bricks/toy food, dolls and buggies.

Maybe if you give him 2 plates at lunch he will transport from one to the other instead of two the floor although I think personally I'd draw the line with the mucking with food - although generally with schemas it'll pass.

Basically the schema means a method by which the child has chosen to do his learning - not consciously but you'll see how many different types of learnign they will gain through transporting/circular schemas.

i.e. with your ds, capacity and volume (how much can I get in the truck), comparison, when he looks at how many he's moved from one space to the other, how much he's got left to move etc, etc.

He may move on to another schema or combine it with another schema later. So if you give him lots of things with wheels for transporting he may explore rotation (circular schema) or straight lines (transporting in particular directions).

The dorset site is good and if you are really interested read Cathy Nutbrown, Threads of Thinking.x

He does it because he has to do it!!

He is compelled to move things around - sometimes whole sections of the room get moved from one place to another regardless of other children's cries

It's a learning style... one of many he might go through. :D
