I have been minding since August and have today registered as self employed with HMRC. I haven't a clue about tax issues etc and when I registered on their website today there was a page that mentioned doing a self assessment by the 31st January!!!! Does anyone know if I have to do one of these or not?? Haven't even started my accounts yet so I really hope not!! :confused:

Yes it´s the tax year 2009-2010 , so you won´t have to do one. I just rung hmrc today to clarify (i started minding in July)..

No you don't need to do one, but I do :blush: Always leave it till the last moment, hate doing it. Got all information sorted just need to write up in accounts book and submit!

I need to do one too, I did it last year so do i log in with same details or do i need to register with them again?

Your tax year finishes Mrch/April each year so you cannot lodge in January! The 31st is talking about the tax year 2009/10
You should have a system in place for recording all income and expenditure and you use this to make up to your accounts for your return
If you want to lodge online, go on now and register for your password as it takes a couple of weeks
